It now appears that Smeagol may be blind in one eye and partially blind in the other.
(
He has what looks like a cataract on the right eye and the other looks milky. I was so hopeing we got rid of the infection in time!!!!!

I won't know for sure until we visit the vet again. Please cross your fingers for Smeagol that he will be able to see.

It sounds like he has an eye infection. I doubt it is cataracts. Please get the babyto the vet. I fostered a rat once that had an eye infection. The owners didnt take her to the vet and she ended up loosing the eye. It wasnt surgically removed either they just let it rot. When I got her she was sooooo sick. So please take Smeagol to the vet. He's a cutie pie!

He's been to the vet on Monday and did have eye infections in both eyes. The right was worse than the left and I soaked it with a warm wet cotton ball and then applied the stuff the vet gave me everyday. The vet said that he might have eye problems because of the infection, but I was hoping he wouldn't. He's too young for antibiotics, unfortunately. I will be taking him back in on Monday to get checked out again. He does seem to detect light, as he closes his eyes if the light gets a little brighter. The right eye is very milky looking (no pus though) and the left is less milky. I didn't know if this was normal maybe because of them just being opened. Does anyone know?
Also, I'm having an issue with my milk replacer. I have powder that I dilute with two parts water to one part powder. He gobbles it up happily, but after storing it for a few hours in the fridge, it congeals at the bottom of the container into gel. The top part is still milky. I'm not sure how to get that to stop. I fear the good nutrients and such are getting stuck at the bottom. No amount of shaking the container makes it dissolve.

OK! It's not just me thank goodness.
It gets so gross so fast. The canned stuff lasted much longer. Once I get done with this can of powder I might switch back to the pre-mixed stuff.

Don't get discouraged about the eyes yet. I had 6 foster kittens a few months ago who had similar eye conditions--(looked like cataracts to me too). It was a lot of work giving that many kittens eye medicine several times a day (and bottle feeding them cause their mom was too sick and had to be separated from them). I foster for the animal shelter who sent me to the vet with them. He thought he would have to put them to sleep. But the shelter people told me to do my best and they all turned out fine. All of their eyes got better and they all were adopted very quickly. Good luck with your little guy!

Smeagol is doing great! He's up to 7.5 ounces from 4 ounces last Monday. His 2 week birthday is tomorrow. I had to take my poor Pippin into the vet today, so Smeagol tagged along and the vet gave him a quick check. He is tracking light and dark and she says that while he's got a bit of corneal scarring, he'll be able to at least see shadows.
He loves to cuddle and has no visible issues.

Smeagol is insanely cute... He's going to be brown tabby when he's older, right? 'cause now all I see is kitten fluff!

I've been reading through your thread and I'm thankful for all the links provided, and your experience as well.

Yesterday a neighbor asked if I would care for an abandoned 10 day old kitten. We already have 3 cats, a puppy, and a Chinchilla so I was hesitant to do so... but the neighbor (who's alllergic) had called everyone and no one would take it unless it was at least six weeks, so being the kindhearted person I am, I took it. Okay, that was a horrible run-on sentence. Sorry.

Anyways, I'm having the same problem as you initially did. I can get him to pee no problem, but I can't seem to get him to poo.
I've tried everything recommended in the threads and links but nothing seems to be working.

However, I did not find if it was safe or not to give him karo syrup or something like it... Do you happen to know if it's safe?

Thanks!

Oy! Trust me, I feel your pain!!!
Someone posted to me that kittens don't poop everyday, and it's so true. I've been keeping a journal with pee/poop/eye medicine/food logs. If I don't write it down, I WILL forget it.
Just keep doing what you are doing and keep track of how long it's been since he pooped. Smeagol gets very restless and iritable when he needs to poop. He cries a lot. I put him on a folded piece of papertowel and rub his back and tummy when he does this and encourage him. This seems to work best, but it's not fool proof.
The other day at the vet, he decided to pee on me, then poop in the exam room, so I had to clean him up there. lol!
I don't know if karo syrup is safe, but I put a couple drops of vegetable oil in his bottle when he seemed to be straining. I've been very lucky in that he has not had diarhea at all, so I'm happy with that.
Unfortunately, all my cats now have fleas.

Smeagol stays with his adoptive family on Sundays while I'm at the festival and they have an indoor/outdoor cat and a dog. Both have some fleas from going outside although they are treated. So he tends to pick up a few and brings them to my house.

I know I have to be careful what kind of chemicals I use around Smeagol, but I'm not sure what I should do. Treat the adult cats, treat the house, flea comb the hell out of all the kitties??
I got several fleas off of Pippin (who is in love with the flea comb) and several off of Simple. I haven't tried Sparkle Boo or Morris yet.
I comb Smeagol on a daily basis but have only gotten one flea so far.

Anyone have any ideas?

Dev...the adults can receive flea treatment from your vet. As for the kitten...you need to be very careful with him....I would put a drop of dawn dishwashing detergent in a cup with some water...get a flea comb and run the comb through the kitten's fur. Place the flea comb in the cup and make sure any fleas are left in the cup. Then dry off the flea comb and comb the kitten again. Wash any beds that your cats have been using and vacuum all the places that you cats have been.

Smeagol is still doing well and I don't see any milkiness left on his eyes. He is seeing SOMETHING at least because he attacks my face and tries to latch onto my lip everytime I get it near him. LOL!
I've started letting him wander on the floor a little and he's enjoying exploring the living room. The older cats are fascinated by him and don't hiss at him. They just watch him and occasionally wander over to sniff him. I also took an old baking pan and put some litter in it as well as a small water bowl to try to get him to drink from it. I'm still stimulating him to pee, but I get him to go in the litter box.
Yesterday I weighed him again and he's up to 12.3 ounces!!! He's now 3 times his weight that I found him at! He's so round too!

I will try to get some pics of him today when I'm at work with him. He's such a cute little fluff ball.
I've started lengthening the time between feedings to about 5-6 hours.
Thanks to all the advise I got here, I think he's going to grow up into a beautiful cat!
