Hi, I'm new to this forum so sorry if I am posting in the wrong place. I have a 5mth old kitten who is exhibiting being on heat signs, rolling around, meowing, hind legs raised and back legs pawing etc. (I haven't had a female cat before) I wondered how long is this likely to go on for. She is booked for neutering at the University vet clinic early next month and is firmly kept inside (definitively don't want kittens). she looks uncomfortable -is she? Any advice appreciated.

Well she is a little, maybe more frusterated if anything. But there isn't a whole lot you can do. First heats can last longer or shorter, it really depends on the cat. If she gets really annoying you can put her in a dimly lit room with soft music playing to maybe calm her down. Is there any reason you are waiting so long to spay her? Could you get her in sooner? Cats can be spayed as young as 8 weeks old so she is ready to go anytime. Maybe see if yu could get her in sooner. Unless money is the problem or something.

She can be in heat for about a week, then go out for about 2 weeks, then back in ago. She's not in pain or anything. Its more annoying then anything else.

Be very careful tho - if she's in full heat, she will try to get outside.

The rescue centre I got her from has a deal with the uni vet school to neuter the cats,(works out way cheaper) I have to wait ages because of the long waiting list. She was booked in at 2month. I might contact them and see if I can get in sooner. She had her vac at my usual vet.

also some vets are happy to spay whilst they are in heat but you have to find one. not easy to do. try to find one that does keyhole surgery for less trauma.

I'm keeping her firmly inside but shouldn't be a problem as she has a fear of outisde. we have been trying for months to indroduce her to outside but as soon as we put her down she runs flat out back inside, shaking and real scared. So she will have a rest from out side introductions for a while
