Ok, I feel much better knowing that he has come and gotten the food, I think everyone on the board was thinking your poor cat was stuck and starving, but it sounds more like he's in love with his new hiding spot. Either way, it's time for him to give it up and once you get him safely out, block off the vent and make sure you check for other dangerous hiding places for him. If he's a really private cat, maybe you could look into giving him a safe hiding place, like a cat tunnel or a covered cat bed.

We certainly will, we're gonna end up taking apart the vent ourselves, and we are going to bolt down the vent grates for good.

okay,

How do we cut apart the vents?
because the vent he hides in or at least the section of vents he hides in happens to be under and in flooring.

You mentioned a property owner? Does your family live in an apartment or rented house? If so, try checking with them, they will know the best way to get at the vent.

blasais = not taking something seriously enough, laid back...

well what can i say, it does help for one to put all the information in the first post..."no he has not come out" says to me & i'm sure others - he hasn't come out....but obviously he has.

anyway & more importantly, i'm glad to hear he's had food/water, & please as soon as he comes out to get food or whatever make a real effort to quickly block the vent, it may take a few attempts but you'll manage it!

let us know how you get on

Have you tried borrowing or renting a humane trap from the humane society, i.e., the type used for trapping ferals, and putting your cat's food in there? That would be the easiest thing to try.

If that doesn't work, I think you/your mom are going to have to get the property manager to call the company that installed/services the heating system - they should have an idea of how the ducts are connected to the furnace. Somebody from the company should be able to come and detach the appropriate duct(s) from the furnace, and use a brush or broom, etc., to make your kitty go upward and out the vent. They might even be able to use a camera to inspect the ducts, and gently prod the kitty upward. Somebody will have to be stationed right there with a blanket, and trap the kitty.

Once the kitty is removed from the room, shut the door, and screw down the grate to the vent. Then make sure that all other grates are firmly screwed down.

I think you mean "blasé".

Anyway, back on track. The humane trap sounds like the easiest way to get the kitty. Trying to get through the vents if they are already closed in could be difficult and I'd consider that a last option.

One trick I haven't seen here is I think you should try & bait your trap (or even just use as bait) Kentucky Fried Chicken. It's supposed to be irresistable. Of course that's if you're in the US - I didn't check before I started typing this - keep us updated!

What a little stinker, by the way, LOL.

HOORAY!!!
Socks is out and we've sealed up the vent grates for good.
Socks isn't very happy with us right now.
he sat growling at me all night. And giving me dirty looks every now and then.
When we got him out, we got him right to the vet because of the rust in the vents. He was okay.
Anyway thank you soooo much for the help everyone!

He's still giving me dark looks.
Thanks everyone!

I'm sure he in some where deep deep deep deep deep deep

It sounds to me like he could use a nice dark place to call his own. We just had to buy a crate for our puppy, for nighttime, and we put a blanket over it...and at just about any time of day one of the cats is using it. I think he needs a "den".

I'm sooooo glad that your kitty is out and safe! He's upset now, but he'll soon get over it. As suggested set up a spot for him where he can have a quiet dark place of his own, maybe put a blanket in the corner of the closet and always leave the door open so he can get in and out.

Two of the favoured spots for my cats is the pots cupboard which Chynna figured out how to open and the far corner of my bedroom closet. Both places are dark and not easily accessible by a human, LOL
