My boss' son started kindergarten last year and he was 6. His birthday is September 17th or something like that.

I think it varies by where you live. My niece will be able to start next year, her BD is Sept 9th and she will be just turning 5 then.

I know here they want kids to know ABC s , 1-100 , colors , left from right and how to read... I am getting old I thought that is what preschool thru first grade was for....

A lot of kids are Sesame Street pros by the time they get to kindergarten and already know numbers and letters.

Hopefully, mom and dad have taught them manners and how to get along with others!

I know my boss' son learned something like 50 'sight' words last year in kindergarden but I'm not sure what else he had to know before he got in there.

Students must be 5 by August 1st, for most places I know, BUT just because the child is 5 does not mean they are ready for kindergarten. Most districts require all students to be current on their shots too. I personally recommend Preschool. There is a big difference between the students who did go to preschool and those who did not.

Well, Jeremy knows his ABC's and I think last I knew he could count to 20. He was looking through a picture book with Grandma, (jerry's mom) and she said, "oh look Jeremy, there's a birdie!" He laughed and said, "no no Nana, that is a penquin"!

Here in germany they have to start first grade when they are 7. For me personally that is too old.

Back in the 80's when i was living in england, i was sent to Nursey school at 7 months old, but that was because my parents are deaf and i needed to learn to talk.
I was then sent to preschool, and then kindergarden at 3 years old, and then i started first grade at 5 years old.
Well that was in the 80's

I feel sorry for the kids in the next generation! they have to go to school longer!!

I went to nursery/press-school when I was 3 and then reception at 4 and then infant school at 5.

My mum much prefers the kids that went to preschool/nursery too

I think Pre School makes alot of difference, My grandson went from the time he was 3 through kindergarden, they even learned spanish. Anything early can only help develop a lot of extra skills for them.
