Does anyone know the requirements now a day to send a child to kindergarden here in the US? I'd be curious to know what they are for overseas as well. My nephew will be 4 in 2 weeks..........

I don't have any children, but one of my brothers and his wife have small children. She says they have to be 5 before September 30th and they have to have all immunization shots before they can start school.

Waaaaaaay back when I started kindergarden, I was 4 years old. My sister and I started school the same year. She started 1st grade while I started kindergarden. Kindergarden came into play the year I started school. So technically, she only went through 12 years of school while I had 13.

Here we have Junior Kindergarten (JK) (usually 4-5 y/o) and Senior Kindergarten (5-6 y/o)

Back home in England we have 'reception' (4-5 y/o) and my mum was luckily enough to get that class this year

I know with my mum's class some were 4 when they started, I would have to check on when they have to be 5 but I know there is a set date and they need all shots etc

wiki has the info on the differences around the world
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindergarten

Oh and I am sure Jan can somehow manage to change the thread to talking about something else and send it to the gutter

Here they have to be 5 before Sept. 10.
They have to have the necessary shots also and have proff they've had them done.
Other than that, there isn't anything else.
I have a 1st grader,so I went through it last year.

I think it varies from state to state, but I think the immunizations being done beforehand are pretty standard.

Here in Belgium, where I live, you leave your child to somebodey else after three month when you go back to work. The mother can stay home six month if she is breast feeding but then a lot of the cost falls on you.
Normally both parents have to work to be able to support a family.
If you can afford it you can keep your children home untill the age of three. Then school begins.
In Sweden, were I come from, one of the parents can stay home for 18 month with 80% of his or hers salary. You share the monthes between the parents as you want. When the child is 18 month your community is obliged to provide you with day-care for your child. School begin at the age of seven.

Here in Sask, Canada, requirements for a child to start kindergarden are:

a) immunizations up to date.
b) For instances, if you wanted your child to start kindergarden this sept and the child was 4, they'd have to turn 5 before Jan 31, 2007.

We also have prekindergarden for 3 and 4 year olds.

My son has the option of being the youngest in his class or potentially the oldest. His b-day is jan 30th.

I thought it was the same pretty much all over the US but found out differently when we moved to Texas in Jan.

In Mississippi (where we moved from) my son was totally up to date on shots and ready for starting fall 2006

In Texas-- he had to get 7 more shots ! I was apalled! talk about overvaccination!

He got his 5th vaccination for kindergarten 2 days after school started this year.

He will be due for more at the beginning of next year so that he can start 1st grade

It depends on the school district and the state regulations....for the most part...a child has to be around 5 before aug/sep..depending on where they are to start regular kindergarden. However, in a private school, some places will accept them at age four into regular kindergarden as well. Also, there are several prek programs a child can enter into before starting kindergarden...a lot of daycare centers provide these
Check into the specific regulations with your local school board district to find out the definitive regulations. Also, check out what the school district requires as far as immunizations go.

I would imagine at the age 5 most kids know the basics to get into kindergarten. I'm sure they don't HAVE to know it all. I don't think there is a S.A.T. for kindergarten, I'm sure they just have to know something.
They gotta start somewhere, and if they're behind, then they might hold the kid another year, hence all the "held back" students.
