I found an abandoned 3 week old kitten im my backyard today. I brought it to the SPCA and they were going to euthanize it. I did not have the heart to do that, so I decided to take care of it. So I brought the kitten to the vet. I found out it's a little girl and she is eatin wet food with no problems. The thing is I tried to make her go to the bathroom by rubbing her genitals and bum with a paper towel moistened in warm water. She didn't do either!!!! I'm just scared that she wont go!! I was just wondering if any of you have any advice, tricks anything!!!!

Thank you very, very much

It takes a bit of practice to stimulate them right. Try a cotton wool ball instead of the paper towel - it might feel more comfortable for her. Just keep trying about five minutes after she eats and she will probably respond eventually.

Have you tried filling a small cake pan with non-clumping litter and putting her in it to see what she does? I found a 3 week old awhile back and he knew exactly what to do and never had one accident. I assume you are keeping her in a small crate or box so she doesn't have a lot of room to get into things? Just put a small cake pan with litter in it with her and instincts may kick in. Feed her and put her in it, if she doesn't go soon then stimulate her to go. She may not need bottle fed either if you haven't tried putting a dish of glopy wet kitten food down for her, she might know what to do.

With such a small kitty, you can also try running warm water and holding her back end under the water, very gently massaging her abdomen. This helps avoid having to clean her up after she does her business.

She should have access to a small pan with non-clumping litter, however.

TNR's link to the Kitten Rescue site will be the best resource.

A three-week old may not need manual stimulation to evacuate, but after only a day or so may be too frightened to do so around you. Give the kitten a small litter pan and some privacy--you may well find yourself with a very healthy stool. Save it and take it and the kitten to a vet for a parasite check--very young kittens have naturally runny stools (liquid diet), but if its old enough to eat solid food a runny stool may indicate coccidiosis (an easily treatable parasitic infection).

My first feral capture was a young female we held for almost a month while she recovered from a paw abcess which had to be surgically drained. She didn't crap for almost a week, and I'm sure that was due to fear and a lack of privacy. After that, it was daily clean-up....
