As some of you know, my sweet Loki has asthma! Anyway, he's on prednisone for it (and what a little chunky boy he is now). The vet told me to try to cut his dosage in the fall to see how he did. Anyway, he's been on 1/2 tablet every other day for a couple of months. I have tried cutting back to half a tablet every 3 days just to see how he does. No luck! My poor sweet Lolo had two asthma attacks tonight! I've upped his dosage, and if he doesn't come around, I'll have to start him off on the long course over 6 weeks with the high dosages and gradually bring him back down to the every other day again! I have asthma too, so I know how he feels, poor sweetie! Anyway, I feel so bad and so guilty - if I hadn't cut him back it wouldn't have happened! He's napping right now - tired out from his ordeal. If I can't get him back on track, he'll have to get a mask and inhalers! And it's all my fault! Bad meowmy!

you're not a bad meowmy! You were just following the vets suggestion to cut him back a bit...it didn't work...now you know! Don't beat yourself up over it! You're such a good meowmy!!! He's probably already for given you for it
I have astmah myself, and know full well how prednisone can be..don't feel bad. You fixed his meds now and he should be stable again soon. It's normal for him to feel kinda gross or sleepy afterwards...even to gain a bit of weight. Don't feel bad! He's lucky to have such a loving mommy taking care of him!

Thank you so much. I just feel so bad for him - he gets so scared when he's having an attack!

Don't blame yourself. You were trying to do what is best for Loki in trying to get him on the minimum dose of prednisone. He'll be fine and will forgive you. My Eric is on prednisone too, half a tab per day. Fortunately his asthma is not too bad, the only symptom he has is coughing. I've tried to cut his meds too- no luck. I hope Loki is feeling better soon and doesn't need the inhaler. Hugs and vibes for him.

Thanks so much. He's having a snooze right now - worn out from his ordeal!

{{{Sending prayers and vibes}}} out to Loki.
I know that you feel terrible, but prednisone is a very strong drug, and you and your vet were just trying to "look at the big picture". I have asthma, too, and it IS SCARY!! Poor Loki!! You two need to be able to just cuddle up and have a quiet, relaxing evening.
By the way, are there any new perfumes that might have set this latest attack off? My hubby bought a scented laundry detergent, and I did only his clothes in it, but when he came back from court to our office, I could feel that only-too-familiar wheezes and shooting pains in my lungs before my coughing kicked in. Being in a smaller area with his shirt was enough exposure. I don't understand why the product makers have to scent their products so heavily - if the detergent does a good job of cleaning, why the overkill with the scent?

I know just what you mean! I try to keep the house as scent-free as possible, because both Loki and I are sensitive to strong scents. I did have to shampoo the rug the other day, because Jacob had tossed up a hairball on it, but I use the Allergen-free stuff, because he is on the floor so much closer to the scent. I don't think that's it, though, because he would have reacted sooner if it was. The vet didn't think he will ever be able to go off the prednisone for good, but she thought it was worth a try in the fall. When he first went on them, in the spring, we tried a seven week course of them, gradually reducing and then he managed to be off them for almost a month before he had an attack and had to start all over again. I feel so bad for him - I know it's scary and he doesn't understand what's happening - he just knows he can't breathe.

My Wellington is also on prednisone for asthma so I understand where you are. My vet and I experimented with the dosage and now he is on a quarter tablet every other day and that keeps it at bay most of the time, though he does have an occasional coughing fit (much less since the move to France). But I researched prednisone and it is a drug that does not stay in the system very long, so that often a small dose given more often works better. Why not ask your vet if you could try Loki on a quarter tablet every other day instead of the half every three days? Just a suggestion.

Mega hugs to you and Loki. I know how hard it is when your kitties are scared or hurting and they just look at you..and you don't know how to make it better. Hopefully he can get back on track with his meds and feel like his old self!

Poor Loki!!!! It's bad enough having asthma, then they put him on meds that make him FAT!!!
I had to be one prednisone for awhile....for my eczema...it was simply horrid. (I looked like a stuffed Thanksgiving turkey
) You are physically hungry ALL the time. I would just try to make sure he drinks alot of water, and give him extra extra playtime/exercise time....I'm sure he'll be ok, he has a great Meowmy taking care of him!
I bet maybe the 1/4 tablet every other day might do the trick....

That's a great idea. He has to go for his shots and checkup soon, so I'll talk to her about it. His asthma control is definitely on the agenda.

Thanks everybody for the good advice and kind words. It really means a lot to me. Loki seems to be feeling a little better today - no further attacks, although he is very quiet and subdued. He probably still feels a little rough - I know that it takes me several days to get over an asthma attack, and once you have once, until you're over it you're more sensitive to everything. He was very clingy last night and wanted to be cuddled more than usual - I didn't mind a bit, even when he was sleeping on top of me in bed instead of beside me on his pillow! Thanks so much for all your good vibes.
