I just got a high-end scrimshaw order. The man is in Southern California and makes pool cues and wants me to do 5 sticks for him! He wants different designs, one of the New York skyline with the twin towers, one a cowboy motive, a wizard, a troll and a dragon! He will furnish all the ivory and wants color. He is leaving California today will arrive here tomorrow with the first order. I am stunned, he was referred to me by my ex-husband! Goodness, what a surprise!

Guess your reputation is starting to get around!
And, yes, we definitely want to see your work when you finish. You are very talented with scrimshaw, so I'm not surprised he was referred to you.

Sockie's mom? Scrimshaw is etching on ivory then filling it with inks and colors. If you click on the link in any of my posts that say Visit our Krafty World, and then go to the section on scrimshaw, you can see my early stuff that was set up on our web page.

Your work is so beautiful! I'm just learning to knit, which I'm really enjoying, but I have no real artistic talent. I have to ask a dumb question. Isn't ivory illegal? Or is that only elephant tusk ivory? Thanks,

Laurie

There is a wide illegal black market that does distribute illegal elephant ivory at huge profits. I have valid concerns about elephant ivory and it has to be pre-treaty which means before 1989 and there has to be paperwork accompanying it to legitimize it. Walrus ivory which is what I primarily work with, that and mastadon, is not illegal but has to be stamped or worked by a native prior to being sold. We used to find tusks all the time at Dutch Harbor in Alaska, so I still have a lot of walrus ivory in my own reserve as well as mastadon, and sea lion teeth.

At one show I had a guy come up with an elephant tusk wrapped in cloth. He claimed it was legal and pre-treaty but when I unwrapped it you could still see the blush in the white (indicating a fresh tusk and the blush was blood) While I talked to him, Mike slipped away got security and the guy was arrested.

Thanks for filling me in - while you were writing that reply I was over at geocities actually reading the page, where you explain it really well. Thanks for being such a great citizen! The elephants are often killed for their tusks, and it's such a tragedy.

Although I have to admit - while the picture of you and Mike was filling in, it said Mary Ann and Mike, and, Hissy, at first I wondered who Mary Ann was! LOL!
