ok,so wednesday morning,i went outside to have a ciggy, and noticed gaspard walking strangely,so i went over to him and picked him up to bring him indoors when i got him in puss/blood started pouring from his neck and he was howling, i thought oh my god what has happend,i got the cat carrier and put him in,straight down to the vet,vet said it was an abcess burst but as he was cleaning it the wound started to pour with fresh blood, the vet said hed been bitten by a dog or fox and it had punctured his jugular vien, the vet seemed to panick, usherd me out and said he was taking him to hospital, well he nearly died and had to be heavily sedated due to pain, needed anti-biotics,and intensive care over night, wasnt well enough to come home yestaday, hes now back home,(we are keeping him indoors) but we had to take him back to the vet at 4 because he was howling with pain,so he had another pain killing shot, hes now asleep.the wound is really bad, theres a one by two inch raw/bloody/wound with 2 big puncture holes.this is so dreadfull,im going to have to totally rethink my OUTDOOR CATS IS NATURAL attitude, the reality is hes suffered very badly and could have died.

I'm so very sorry that you and your baby are going through this right now!! Sending major healing vibes his way!!!

This does, however, clearly illustrate the point of why so many of us are against letting your cats outdoors.

Please give him gentle scritches for me, and keep us posted on how he's doing!

You did the best you could. You did what you thought was right at the time.

And you got him to the vet right away. You've done well with him. Try not to beat yourself up too much.

Sweetie!

I can completely understand how awful this is!
My RB Disco would get into all sorts of trouble - she was born a barn cat!

I have indoor cats and many others do too! I thought it was unnatural until I moved to the city (not the most animal friendly of cities at times)!

I'm sending so many }}}VIBES{{{ that your sweet baby returns to full health very soon!

I'm always on the end of a PM

I am glad you are rethinking the outdoor/natural thing. It is natural, but then it is natural for another animal to sink his teeth into your cats neck. So I would rather have my cats safe, and as much as I enjoyo seeing them play outdoors, we have a pretty good time indoors, plus they don't have a "secret" life that I don't know about. We will stay in thank you. Glad he survived.

I also hope he heals quick. There are so many dangers.......not only outside either. There are house hold plants, cleaning supplies, chocolate, and others that are dangerous and inside.
You have to do what YOU feel is best for your cat and you.I was always taught that cats belonged outside IF you had any.Our first cat was an outside only cat.She was a beautiful Calico cat named Patches. She was spayed and lived to be around 8..........we weren't sure of her age as we found her.SHe wasn't sick and was never road kill. She just died from old age.
Blaze is an inside/outside cat right now.She was so distraught when we had the orphan kits here, that we started letting her out some. When Neela died-another thread- she was devistated and would only lay around. She wouldn't eat or drink and play was TOTALLY out of the question. She would run to the door and meow and scratch it until I thought she would get bloody paws from it.We sat down as a family and decided that for HER happiness, she would be allowed inside and outside.ONLY during the day though. She is so mauch happier being able to run and play out in the sunshine.
Again, you have to do what you feel is best............noone else can tell you what to do with your baby.
I hope he heals REALLY quick!!
Lilly and Corwin are inside only cats.Lilly hasn't known the joy of playing in the sunshine and I don't feel bad about that..........it's our choice.Corwin had been allowed outside UNTIL Lilly came......... for brief visits.Blaze has known it and I don't feel it is right to deprive her of that little bit of Heaven.
