Spring is here, what should I do with my soil?

Thanks for the very informative post, Winchester!  I'm thinking I'll go ahead and give the peonies a try.  I read things like they can take 3 years to fully establish themselves before they begin to bloom.  I'll be honest, I've never heard of a peony tree, but sounds too fickle for my liking! I...

My awkward flower bed...need ideas re-shaping it

The title pretty much sums it up: I've got an awkward flower bed.  Moved into this home a year and a half ago, and I didn't give too much thought to this flower bed at the time. But this year I've got plans. Before I commence with those plans, I just want to know...can anything be done for...

    Dog poop in America

I have just e-mailed our township manager, relayed the issues we've been having in the neighbourhood, and suggested this link.  I really appreciate you posting it here!

    Dog poop in America

This is how it was back in my town in England.  I don't think they provided poop bags, but there were designated red bins to dispose of dog waste in the parks.  I definitely think this is a great idea!

Spring is here, what should I do with my soil?

Awesome - I would love to see some photos!  I could use some inspiration!  The blooms on mine aren't too impressive in the photos - I've been slowly learning about deadheading spent blooms to encourage growth of new ones - but if you Google more images you'll see some fantastic blooms!

    Dog poop in America

mschauer - that's terrible. Fortunately for me the neighbourhood dogs have so many options (and are drawn by other doggy smells) that we don't have too many incidents of poop in our yard.  But it has happened, and when a little bit of poop was tracked inside our home, that was when my husband...

Spring is here, what should I do with my soil?

That sounds lovely!  My husband is actually petrified of spiders and is convinced rose bushes are their favourite nesting place!  I wasn't allowed to plant one anywhere near our deck or front yard, so the one that I do have has been banished to the worst place for it (the shady side of the...

    Dog poop in America

LOL, just wish the township would place official signs in neighbourhood areas like they did where I used to live!

Spring is here, what should I do with my soil?

Awesome, thanks!  I had it in mind that I could work the old mulch into the ground, but recently discovered that this could rob nitrogen from the soil.  Following your recommendation for compost, I've read that the addition of compost is the best way to amend clay soil over time.  Supposedly the...

    Dog poop in America

I have to confess that I only work with a handful of people, so it's not a huge number.  But it still surprises me that the majority don't see anything wrong. Regarding the sign: it totally crossed my mind!  I also thought about writing a letter addressed to "the neighbour with the Bernese...

    Dog poop in America

It's good to know that there are responsible folk like you out there.    I was surprised by the responses, too, including: "It's just fertilizer." I wonder whether people think it's acceptable around my area simply because they see everyone else do it.  It's unfortunate.      Hubby and I are...

    Dog poop in America

Thanks Di and Bob, I 100% agree with you!  I honestly thought I was going crazy or just being uppity when some of the people around me didn't seem to have a problem with this, but this is because they are also culprits ("I'll puke" etc).  If you don't want to pick up the poo, then let your dog...

Spring is here, what should I do with my soil?

Ahh, spring is here and it feels so good!  I love watching Willoughby move from step to step as he follows the ray of sunshine coming through a nearby window.  Such a kawaii kitty. This year I'm on a mission to replant a flowerbed at the front of my house.  Last year I attempted to dress it up...
