when is it okay to handle new kittens, without having to worry if the mother will stop caring for them or just eat them ?

I have a question, my cat just had kittens maybe 2 weeks ago. the kittens are fine and so is she, however now the mother cat id pooping in the tub. not every day or all day just maybe twice or three times a week. now my question is what is making her do this? and why now? and yes her litter box...
