    Frightened new kitten

Thanks VBCatParent. I'll stick close when they're playing tomorrow and watch what he does. I'm still looking for a treat that he likes. I feel like we have half the contents of the pet shop in our cupboard.  The 6 year old actually got in a couple of strokes this evening. I think Pix was too...

    Frightened new kitten

So he's feeling conflicted? As long as he's not likely to lash out and hurt one of the children, I'll take that as progress! He has a kitten's instinct to play, and they have the energy to play with him as much as he wants. I don't mind if he bonds with them rather than me as long as we can get...

    Frightened new kitten

Well, at this point he is still with us. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow since we brought him home. I don't know if there has been real progress. I'm puzzled by his behaviour and don't know how to interpret it.  He seems comfortable in the house. He has his favourite sleeping spots in the bedroom...

    Frightened new kitten

When I started this thread I thought there'd be incremental improvements day by day and my updates would be all "Yay, today he finally .....". I really wish that were the case.  A properly socialised cat understands that comfort can come from humans, even if they're too frightened to reach out...

    Frightened new kitten

All I'm looking for from him is some indication that a connection might be possible.  I'm confused about why we would be expected to keep him here if it's obvious that he's not happy and comfortable with us. How is it fair to expect him to live in a place with people he wants nothing to do...

    Frightened new kitten

I'm sorry if I came across as flippant at any point. This is a distressing situation for all of us and I definitely don't feel flippant. I spoke with the breeder again this morning. She wants to give him another week, and if there's still no change we'll talk then about what to do.

    Frightened new kitten

I hear what you both are saying, but a few points: We didn't adopt a child, we bought a cat with expectations of what we were getting based on his breeder's assessment of his personality. We certainly don't want him stressed but ultimately he needs to fit in with us, not the other way round...

    Frightened new kitten

He tolerates being picked up but I've only got as long as it takes to walk to the crate. He's pretty antsy by the time I get there. I also use it as an opportunity to check him over. Yesterday I found a bleeding claw, presumably from getting it caught on something overnight. If he hisses I back...

    Frightened new kitten

Thanks Sunflowers. Unfortunately there's no space in my room for the crate. It's pretty big. The living room is actually pretty quiet. It's generally only my husband in there on the Xbox, and the kids if they want to do something quiet. All the chaos is at the other end of the house. He has me...

    Frightened new kitten

That thought had occurred to me too. My frustration comes in bursts, and I try to keep away from him at those times. Mostly when I look at him I just feel sad. I'm not the only one trying to interact with him. I thought he might be a bit better with the children since they're smaller and not...

    Frightened new kitten

I like the see-saw emoticon  Pix seems to be settling into a routine, and it's not a good one. At night, when all the humans are in bed, he plays, eats and uses his litter tray, though the slightest human movement sends him bolting for cover. During the day he just hides, not eating or doing...

    Frightened new kitten

Unfortunately once the sun came up he got scared again. He did have two wet food meals overnight though, so I'm not stressed about his uneaten breakfast. I don't think he's touched the dry. He's definitely done a wee (on my jumper unfortunately) and I'm sure I heard him in the litter box...

    Frightened new kitten

I left the door between the ensuite and bedroom open overnight. The little monkey played hard until 3am then started calling for his mum in his lovely oriental voice. A couple of times when he thought I was asleep (who could sleep with all that noise?) he walked all over me and had a good sniff...

    Frightened new kitten

He is exploring, playing, climbing the curtains, grooming, looking at me when he thinks I'm not watching... I am happy :) (Maybe not so much about climbing the curtains, but you can't win them all!)

    Frightened new kitten

Patience ... not one of my strong points! It's good to hear that your Nook is coming round for you. Coming up on 36 hours since Pixel's last meal I got really worried, so I put him in the ensuite with a cardboard box, some blankets, the litter box and the food tray. I figured if he wasn't going...

    Frightened new kitten

Thanks, I'm wafting those vibes in Pixel's direction!  I really really hope he does come through this stage quickly. A very timid cat just won't work in our noisy, busy household. I'm crossing my fingers that he's only this frightened because he was taken from his mother so late and the trip...

    Frightened new kitten

I think I'm just feeling rejected because I so badly need feline love at the moment and he won't even look at me. We'll get there. Thanks for your help.

    Frightened new kitten

Thanks. Yes, I will feel better when he starts to eat. He's just climbed up underneath the bedclothes and has formed a quiet lump under the doona about two feet away from me. Progress, maybe. I do get up periodically to attend to the rest of the family and stretch my legs. I hope that's enough...
