    Care schedule?

So red is turning 1 year old next month. Are there any yearly things I should be planning for (rabies shots, etc)? He seems to be in excellent health, which is great. I just want to be sure I don't forget to get him his 10,000-mile check-up! I realize now this is in the wrong forum...

    Food, ants, etc.

Red is a bit of a sloppy eater, and his messy habits have brought sugar ants into the house. I'm getting tired of checking on his food bowl all day long to be sure he hasn't dropped any food. Does anybody have any suggestions to how I can keep his food area clean? Or, does anybody know how to...

    Teething

Red is about 6 months old now and his new teeth are coming in. I am curious, it looks like his old "fangs" are still there and his new ones are coming in right next to them. Is this normal? Will the old ones eventually fall out when the new ones are in completely? I assumed that's how it...

    Biting

Red has really scratched up my hand lately with his biting. He doesn't even try to scratch me (it wouldn't work since I put softpaws on him anyway). How do I discourage him from attacking my hand and arms all the time? My hand is starting to look like I've been punching rose bushes.

    Soft Paws and climbing

I have considered investing in Soft Paws for Red. I know that it doesn't affect his daily scratching and stretching routines, but will it hinder his ability to climb? I just got him a new cat condo thing that he absolutely loves climbing on, but I'm afraid that with the Soft Paws he won't be...

    Switching food

It seems that Red is getting bored with his Iams, so I mixed in a little Royal Canin today and he seemed to like that, but still did not eat much of the Iams. How do I go about phasing in a new food if he won't eat any of the old?

    Feeding schedule

I've heard that you need to try to keep your cats on a feeding schedule. Red weighed in at 5.4lbs at our last visit to the vet, which according to the Iams bag, he should be eating about 1 1/4 cups of food daily. Lately, I'm lucky if I can get him to eat 3/4 of a cup. I put out about 1/3 cups...

    Vet visit

I took Red to the vet yesterday for boosters, de-worming, etc. Routine stuff. Last night he slept all night, which is a first, but the vet mentioned that he would probably go to bed early because the shots and the gathering of blood and stool samples probably would wear him out. He slept...

    Not eating

Red hardly touched his food today. Is this something that happens with cats occasionally? I haven't changed his food at all. I have some wet food that I use as an occasional treat, and he ate that up, but won't touch his dry stuff. I mean, it's only been one day, so I don't imagine it's...

    Dark room?

I know cats have good night vision, but I get nervous having the lights off in the house at night. The bathroom gets real dark and I'm afraid that Red won't be able to find the litter box. Is this a valid concern?

    "Bedroom" arrangement

Red has been here for a week and I tried to set up his "bedroom" in one room of the house. I put his bed, food, and water all in there with the litterbox in the bathroom. He seems ok with the placement of the litter box, but he always naps by the front door and not in his "bedroom." I think...

    Howdy!

I just got a new kitty (my first!) and boy am I glad I found this forum. He was all sweet an innocent at my parents' house (he's one of my mom's cat's latest litter... did that make sense?). When I got him home to St. Louis, though, wow... he's a hellion! I think I figured it out, though. He...
