Cat not eating after dental surgery

He's started eating again, so I think we're out of the woods. What was so very frustrating to me (and the cat) was that he acted entirely as though he didn't recognize that the food was food -- not repulsed or uninterested, but "hey, I thought you were going to give me food!", hence my guess...

Cat not eating after dental surgery

Yeah, probably wrong about the smell thing. I think he can smell the food, he just doesn’t understand why he doesn’t want it. Appetite enhancers just make him more frantic. I am afraid I have hijacked this thread, so that’s probably enough of an update.

Cat not eating after dental surgery

By my count the pain meds will be wearing off tomorrow, but the baby food is a good suggestion and we’ll give that a shot. oh, I see I wrote “three hour” when I meant “three day.” :/

Cat not eating after dental surgery

The subQ fluids were to stave off dehydration (he’s not been drinking either… but they keep pushing him full of water at the vet, which might have something to do with it). The painkiller is a three hour three day sustained release opiate. We’re using Mirataz trans-dermal as an appetite...

Cat not eating after dental surgery

We’re about 60 hours Post-operation and we haven’t been able to get our cat to eat. He recognizes the food routine and paraphernalia and gets very excited, but once I put it down he pokes his nose at it once and then insists I give him his food again; I am wondering if he has lost his sense of...

Vet anticipated a hairball, reported back confused

(11 days later!) We have something resembling a diagnosis. Our kitty has something that falls under the umbrella of IBD, but apparently it's a version of it my clinic's senior vet has never run into before either. He's trying to figure out what the treatment protocol should be. Fortunately...

It was, I am just … impatient and upset. Pathology is going to take a week.

Vet anticipated a hairball, reported back confused

Hi! I took my ten-year-old cat to the vet yesterday because she'd had intermittent vomiting and no bowel movements for several days. Otherwise active, not in any obvious pain. X-rays showed a dialated small intestine. After a conservative 24 hours with subcutaneous fluids and no food showed no...

Double-check my vet on a coughing cat

A quick update; Cato did well on the pred until I stepped down on schedule, then he had a significant coughing fit in the evening. I put him back on 2x daily immediately, and got in to see the vet (a different one!) for his scheduled re-check. This vet says given the medical history and the...

Double-check my vet on a coughing cat

We are definitely getting some of the smoke from Canada, and Cato’s symptoms coincide with that pretty strongly. Usually this time of year our windows are open, but once we had a coughing cat we closed the windows up. Its certainly a possible cause on our radar.

Double-check my vet on a coughing cat

So the prednisolone certainly seems to be having an effect -- both positive, as in much less coughing and wheezing -- and the side effects I was warned about with increased hunger and thirst. I also found a really good site that explains the maintenance dose is ideally once every other day, and...

Double-check my vet on a coughing cat

If only it were! There's been a lot of turnover at that practice recently, so it's time to get a new vet. I should be seeing one of their regular staff, though. Thank you for the reponse!

Double-check my vet on a coughing cat

I had to take my 9-year-old cat Cato to an unfamiliar vet yesterday for wheezing and coughing. She did a fair amount of bloodwork and a chest x-ray. She said she screened for common viruses of concern, heartworm — all negative. She said the chest x-ray showed "more tissue in the bronchial than...

Pinched nerve or something more serious?

Thanks, yes -- I called the vet and the tech said, given his rapid recovery, it was probably just his leg going to sleep. But I'll keep an eye on it and see if it keeps happening.

Pinched nerve or something more serious?

I just spoke to a vet tech at his regular office and she thinks his leg went to sleep, since he wasn't exhibiting any other symptoms.

Pinched nerve or something more serious?

I have a 14-year-old cat who, except for an increasing fondness for couches, seems to be reasonably healthy. The only chronic condition he's been identified with is a dust mite allergy, for which he's taking Atopica. But this morning I watched him have considerable trouble walking for about five...

Lime-sulfur for dermatitis / skin bacteria

Ziggy'smom, thanks for the tips. We'll give it a try.

Lime-sulfur for dermatitis / skin bacteria

Thanks for the advice! I may let the vet do it. C is such a stubborn cat I don't think there's a thing I can do to keep him from grooming himself.

Lime-sulfur for dermatitis / skin bacteria

It's not just the ears, although he has a problem there too. We haven't ruled out a food allergy but the problem behaves more like an inhalant allergy. Weird advice from your vet there, to give a dip for ear mites. I would have looked for a second opinion, too.

Lime-sulfur for dermatitis / skin bacteria

Hey, folks! My nine-year-old cat ("Cernunnos") has had allergy problems for years, but they've recently become very severe and we're trying to figure out what we can do for him. Injected steroids have lost their effectiveness rather rapidly, but my regular vet has had little to suggest other...
