I've used canned pumpkin a few times to help diarrhea in my own cats, and I've also used it hundreds of times to help dogs with diarrhea at a kennel I used to work at. I like to use yogurt more because my cats generally like it better than pumpkin, but pumpkin does work.

For help getting rid of the diarrhea, try giving him some cooked white rice, plain whole milk yogurt, or some canned pumpkin. Those will help settle his stomach and promote more solid stools. Hope he feels better soon!
