Had I let mine run free he'd of crawled up in the couch springs or somewhere else in the house where I couldn't find him.
It only took a few days and he turned out to be terrific.. he's not afraid of anything in the house or other people's dogs.
If the kitten isn't pet and doesn't feel secure...
