Aah this makes sense. Freya, (my female kitten I mentioned in http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64493) sometimes growls at me when I scoop out her poop, then runs back in and christens the tray.
Perhaps it is a dominance thing, or just "leave my poop alone you !"
