Is it okay and beneficial to feed a cat a mixture of wet and dry food? And how often, if so?

He's full grown, over a year old. My mom got him from the lady who cleans our house so we don't have any real information about his birthdate, history, or breed and things like that. This is our first time having a cat so we're pretty new about everything. He's been with us for three days now...
