How can I keep my kitty away from the couch?

How can I train my kitten to undestand when he is allowed to do something or not? For example he jumps on my bed and I want him not to, I grab him form his neck, shake him while telling him no and I redirect him to his own feline bed Am I doing this wrong? what can I do in such situations?
