Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Yeah, definitely -- Oldie is more of a toy chaser (chasing string, chasing toys to play fetch, etc) rather than a roughhouser. Newbie pretty much wants to chase and jump on everything that moves. You're definitely right that they have different styles. We recently held a party with ~12 guests...

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

They each sleep in various spots (the cat-tree, the couch, the foot of the bed, the kitty-beds we have set up in both the living room and bathroom, etc). Yesterday we had both cats sleeping on the couch a few feet away from each other (me holding Newbie, who was sleeping, and Oldie, who was on...

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Basically whenever they get close, Oldie growls and hisses at Newbie and occasionally pops him with a paw -- so far though it doesn't seem to be overly aggressive, no actual pain being inflicted, etc. Newbie just wants to play, play, play.

New kitten keeps divebombing at older cat

SO and I have a 5 year old cat, call her Oldie (female). We live in a 2BR apartment. We just adopted a 3 month old kitten, call him Newbie (male). Over the past few weeks, we have put Newbie in one of the bathrooms, all to himself. He has his own litter box, food bowls, water, bed, etc. It's...

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Latest video -- Oldie also hissed and growled after the video ended but it was nothing crazy.

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Not sure yet -- yesterday we had our first sign of major aggression. Oldie came right up to the fence, hissed, growled, and raised a paw as if to attack. To be fair, I was playing with Newbie and he was darting through that triangle tunnel, which at the time was facing the gate. So when Newbie...

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Right now what we do is wait until Oldie is ready to take a quick nap (almost like clockwork every day, in the evening) -- we put her in the bedroom (where she will go sleep on a pillow) and we close the door and let Newbie out for a couple hours and play with him in the main living room /...

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Any recommendations for better places to leave them? So far, Oldie just sort of walks away from anything containing Newbie's scent.

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Yeah, I'll have to try the sock thing again. I did put a few socks in Oldie's bed but she'd just sniff them and walk away. Oldie also likes sleeping on the foot of our bed lately, so maybe we can put a blanket there that Newbie has used? She's a bit on-edge for a few seconds but she returns to...

Not sure if these links will work here, but I took some video:

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Another sited exposure today -- sat in the bathroom with Newbie with the door open + gates up, and my SO on the other side of the fence keeping an eye on Oldie. Oldie hissed a lot, but now seems to be okay with coming up to the gate more often. At one point she even started eating out of her...

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Another update: Decided to go for more sight today. Pulled up the towel so both cats could clearly see each other through the gate. At first, Oldie was *extremely* hissy and growly, but we started playing with each cat at the same time and soon they became distracted / desensitized enough to...

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

We use these crinkly toys that look like sushi -- just found out a few minutes ago that Newbie likes playing fetch with them as well, so might be worth a shot!

Having trouble introducing new kitten to old cat

Yeah, we set up some gates + blanket and tried a very very very brief sighted introduction. It was a little hissier than usual but no signs of outright aggression. I think Oldie is just really nervous. But I try imagining it from Oldie's perspective and on some level I can see why. She can...
