Thanks for your suggestions! Shadow spends a varied amount of time in his "sleeping crate" each day, Sometimes only for a few hours overnight, sometimes for about 3 hours in the afternoon. Never more than6 hours at a time (and this is when we had to go to a wedding or whatever)...
Ever since Shadow was a kitten, his "room" (aka "safe area") has been a similar cage to the one below that we got for our malamute years ago.

Shadow is a feral who was rescued as a kitten at 4 weeks. He is now a VERY active, sleek and glossy 7-month-old. He is blind in one eye, but that hasn't slowed him down a bit. :)
