Hi CatPack, Thanks for your suggestions!  Shadow spends a varied amount of time in his "sleeping crate"  each day, Sometimes only for a few hours overnight, sometimes for about 3 hours in the afternoon.  Never more than6 hours at a time (and this is when we had to go to a wedding or whatever)...

Ever since Shadow was a kitten, his "room" (aka "safe area") has been a similar cage to the one below that we got for our malamute years ago.   It's quite large, maybe 4', but his bed, litter box, and water bowl can fit in it easily and this is where he has slept at night since he was 5 weeks...

Shadow is a feral who was rescued as a kitten at 4 weeks.  He is now a VERY active, sleek and glossy 7-month-old.  He is blind in one eye, but that hasn't slowed him down a bit.  :) We adore our kitty, but are looking forward to the time when he will settle down, even a little!  ;)
