Are x-rays overkill here? Or is ultrasound enough?

My cat, Willow, has chronic kidney disease. According to people in the CKD Facebook groups I joined, given his numbers, he shouldn't be looking so sick after he eats. Not every day, but a lot of the time. He often looks dehydrated on these bad days, and his vet has not put him on any sub-q...

Is vegetable glycerin alcohol, and therefore, bad for the liver?

Thanks for all those links. I feel a little better about this supplement now, and like I said, the vet didn't say any ingredient was bad. I'll probably specifically ask though next time he sees the vet, and of course, keep my eye on my kitty with each new supplement I add.

    FIP

I lost a kitty to FIP years ago, and I'm so sorry that your little guy has to deal with this. My kitty's first symptom was hair loss under his chin and around his mouth. It was only a tiny bit at first but progressed pretty rapidly until the skin around his mouth was raw. I took him to the vet...

Is vegetable glycerin alcohol, and therefore, bad for the liver?

I bought my kitty a supplement for his heart and noticed it contains vegetable glycerin. Just wondering if this is considered alcohol and if it would be bad for a cat with liver problems? His vet looked over my list of supplements/ingredients and said they were fine. But I still worry because I...

Would an liver ultrasound & abdominal x-ray reveal a bile duct blockage?

Thanks for the link. Turmeric is supposed to be antiparasitic too. It's interesting too that some of the aminos/suuplements are useful in treating heart disease as well, which is another possible issue with my kitty. I'll have to research some of those a little better. Thanks! peaches08, no...

Would an liver ultrasound & abdominal x-ray reveal a bile duct blockage?

My cat has severely elevated liver enzymes, had both of these done, and the only conclusion made is that his liver appears small, comparable to that of an older cat, and he's only 3.5 years old. Some days he seems lethargic and just doesn't seem himself. I have him on Denamarin, 1 pill a day...

Is it possible to OD on taurine? CoQ10's extra ingredient worries...

I ran it by his vet, and he said Krill Oil would be fine, 250mg/day - just said to watch for diarrhea.

Good news? Bad news? - heart and liver

That's what I've been thinking, otherwise I'll worry, but the place where I'd have to take him is an hour away. He was so stressed when we picked him up today - it was horrible. His teeth though - the vet checked them and didn't say anything. And he doesn't have bad breath. I'll check out your...

Good news? Bad news? - heart and liver

I took my cat to the vet today for further work-up on his heart & liver. If you've been following this, you know he had an elevated cardio-BNP and sky-high liver enzymes. Unfortunately the vet couldn't do the echocardiogram, but here are the results of what he could do... - blood pressure -...

desperate - need an idea on what this is/happened

I'm so sorry that you had to go through this. Sudden death like that is always hard because you never get to say goodbye, and then you're apt to start replaying everything in your head thinking you could have done something to prevent it. What you said above though has me concerned that he may...

Is it possible to OD on taurine? CoQ10's extra ingredient worries...

I was thinking of giving this kitty krill oil instead of fish oil, but the two brands I narrowed it down to both contain 'vanillin'. I know cats can't eat chocolate. Would vanillin be okay? And are there shellfish allergy concerns as with humans? Note: Found my vanilla answer - it's not harmful...

Is it possible to OD on taurine? CoQ10's extra ingredient worries...

stephenq, thanks for your reply. I'm still not sure if or what type of heart disease he has, but his cardio-BNP was high, so that's probably what's going on. I'm buying these supplements now just so that I'm prepared for tomorrow when we see the vet so that I can start right away, as long as...

Is it possible to OD on taurine? CoQ10's extra ingredient worries...

My cat may have heart disease and I was planning to start him on some supplements for his heart - taurine is one. I'm just wondering if it's possible to give a cat too much taurine. One of his supplements, a chewable which he LOVES, will contain 125mg (per day, as I give him 1/2 of a tablet)...
