Kittens this young can't really be overweight... they go through phases where they get fatter for a while, then get longer and and it balances out. When he is 1 year old your vet can tell you if he is overweight or not. Until then, I wouldn't worry about it.

That is very sad, but perhaps this whole episode was a blessing in disguise, as otherwise it could have been years before it was ever discovered. At least now you can deal with it in the best way possible. Wishing you both the best. x
