Why on earth are my kittens licking their fur bed? It gets really gross because it dries up and gets all white and crusty. How do I stop this?

I feel better knowing that this is just a kitten stage, but it is sure a lot of work checking their paws hourly. We are not equipped to spend a lot of money on a fancy litterbox which removes the poop. So we are just going to be very observant of their paws until they hopefully grow out of it!
