I once had a cat that needed surgery on one leg. She had a bad BAD case. Fortunately, she recovered and the fur grew back over the incisions. Give it some time. The kitties won't mind. I can really understand the worry about post-surgery care. Be patient, It will all be ok.  

If she purrs and feels more relaxed when your around, then at least you are giving her a safe place. I would hope after a few days she will feel at ease to come out if the thing that scared her is not longer there (the saw?). You could notice if its the stray you got by her reaction to him...
