How do you respond to colony cats being removed from schools due to Health Code Violations?

All of the cats at this colony have been fixed. Occasionally, a new cat will show up and the caregivers will trap it and get it fixed as well.

How do you respond to colony cats being removed from schools due to Health Code Violations?

The citation by the health department was for a dead cat found under a portable building on the campus. Also, the health department found food bowls in several places.  There are regular caregivers AND some unknown people feeding. The regular caregivers are discreet when feeding. I.e. pick up...

How do you respond to colony cats being removed from schools due to Health Code Violations?

Now, the school is threatening that if my group doesn't trap and remove the cats, "they will be taken away and euthanized". How do you like that for educating our young people? This is in a "nice" area of town, too - Dr. Phillips.

How do you respond to colony cats being removed from schools due to Health Code Violations?

This is a high school and the problem is that there is no place to relocate them to. We have cats everywhere in Florida. Also, the vacuum effect will just bring new intact cats to the same place. I've seen it a hundred times. It's just really frustrating because it's hard enough to try to reason...

Response to people who don't believe TNR effectively reduces colony populations.

Thanks, Amanda! We had another local news station contact us yesterday and they want to do a POSITIVE story about TNR. We are so thrilled. This time, we will be able to get our message out there.

What are some of your ideas for target trapping of a specific cat in a colony?

You should check with your vet. Some of them will do a flank incision so as not to disturb the milk in the mama cat. This way, she would only have to be away from the kittens for one day. But, I believe the kittens would still need to be 3 to 4 weeks old. Just be sure before you take her in for...

    Bait for TNR

The canned mackerel is awesome! The cats love it because it is SO STINKY. Ugh! I know people who swear by Publix Fried Chicken, too. I've even see people use catnip in addition to whatever food they're using.

    Traps- what kind?

I love the extra large trip plate on the Tomahawk traps. That way, you don't have a cat enter the trap, eat all the bait, and never trip the plate. This happens all the time with our Safeguard traps and Haveahart traps. Have you seen the super fancy manual traps with the remote controlled door...

How do you respond to colony cats being removed from schools due to Health Code Violations?

We have this problem a lot in Orlando. They claim the cats are "dangerous" for the children due to the risk of scratches and Toxoplasmosis.

What are some of your ideas for target trapping of a specific cat in a colony?

We use canned Mackerel fish for bait. It is REALLY stinky and gross, but the cats love it. You can buy it in the canned seafood section of the grocery store. It's usually very cheap. I love the idea of keeping the non-target cat in the trap while you're waiting for the target cat to go in...

I sent the link to the moderator for approval. Thanks for the idea :-)

    Best medications for Feral Cats

You can also use Comfortis for cats. But, you will have to hide it in wet food and be sure the target cat eats it. Good luck with that, but you could try trapping the target cat for the monthly dose of flea meds....either topically or orally in food. I've found that most healthy colony cats...
