Is he interested at all in playing with you with toys? I've never met a cat (even old ones who usually don't play much) who didn't like the Cat Catcher:  There are also the food dispenser toys that you put dry food (or treats) inside and they have to work to get it out.

I wanted to update again to say I ended up adopting the kitten and there have been no further problems with giardia. She had to have a few rounds of medication because she kept testing positive for it even though she didn't have any symptoms, and we had to keep her isolated from our other cats...

My two adult cats share a large litter box. They're siblings and have never had a problem with it. I do keep it very clean, and put out an extra box when we go away and the pet-sitter will only be scooping once a day. So yes, I think one box for one cat is fine!
