Can I bring a disease home to my cat from the animal shelter?

I volunteered at a shelter for about a year, and had no problems. Like the others have said, just following simple hygeine should mostly eliminate the chances of a problem. It's always possible, of course, but not probable.

Dori is not eating her dry food

Okay, my personal opinion? She'd be much better off without dry altogether. I hear people say "I want them to eat dry" all the time. Why? I think many of the problems that cats experience today - diabetes, obesity, renal failure - can often be traced in part to dry food. And I fed dry food for...

    Water Fountain

I know many people that use the Drinkwell and are happy with it. I didn't have good experiences with it personally. I had two Drinkwells die within 6 months of purchase, despite careful cleaning. I've had my current Petmate Freshflow for a couple of years, I think, with no problems at all. If...

    Sick 8 day old kitten.

Is there another vet you can take them to? Frankly, I'd be very worried about them - anemia can kill an adult cat, and it's very serious in a kitten. It could also be a reaction to the flea & worm meds. I've never raised very young kittens, but if it were me, I'd think I'd want them seen by a vet.

How long is a cats memory?

My boys are littermates, and my experience is much the same as Tao's. They still do cuddle up occasionally - but it's always Gizmo who instigates it, and sometimes Simba doesn't allow it. He seems to prefer humans to Gizmo. They do always groom each other, tho. We adopted them from friends...

    Rescue Remedy & drug interactions?

You're giving such a tiny amount that they don't get much alcohol at all. If you're still worried, you can dilute it down with more water, and that'll work fine too.

    Sardine treat

Puss is almost 20, and has had kidney disease for almost 4 years. Her appetite sometimes isn't very good, and I use sardines, clams, and mackerel sometimes to tempt her at those times. She's one of those cats that doesn't like any other sort of treats, so it can be very difficult to tempt her...

    Sign of Senility?

I work from my home, so I know that Puss will do this during the day, as well. She'll be quietly sleeping (in broad daylight) and suddenly cry. It's not blood-curdling, but just unexpected from a sleeping cat! We have a night light on in the room where she sleeps. It really sounds to me like...

    Sign of Senility?

If she was howling a lot, eating a lot, and losing weight, a vet visit would be in order - hyperthyroidism is common in elderly cats, and those are some of the symptoms; but this doesn't sound like that. I don't think it's senility. Puss, who's almost 20, does the same sorts of things. She...

    UTI strikes again?

Let us know how your boy does! Cats' urine should be at a certain pH. If it's higher or lower, crystals may form - and there are different types of crystals, and they need different treatments. In male cats, their urethra is very narrow, so if there are crystals in their urine, it can be...

    UTI strikes again?

First, as the others have said, he needs to see a vet ASAP. Cats, especially male cats, can get blocked from the crystals in their urine and die within 24 hours. Next, yes, $600 to dx & treat a UTI is a lot of money. Is there another vet you can take him to? Do you know anyone with cats who can...

    Antibiotics

As pointed out, yes, antibiotics can cause inappetance. Whenever you have a problem like that, you should discuss it with your vet -- they may be able to try another antibiotic that won't upset her stomach. You can give acidolphilus, too - it's a probiotic which helps to offset the effects of...

    grooming

Some cats adore being groomed; some don't. The zoom groom hissy mentioned is a good option. But I have a cat that doesn't like it, either (he once dragged it out & chewed off one of the rubber nobbies). You might try combing. Some cats that don't like brushing do like to be combed. At least my...

    Rescue Remedy & drug interactions?

No, there's no problem giving any flower essences with other medications.
