Abscess or cancer? Please help, vibes to Sam!

For anyone who might find this thread when looking for guidance, I wanted to update that I lost Sam a few months after this post despite struggling to bring him back to health with tons of vet visits, syringe feeding, etc. Did several procedures to drain and clear the abscess, but it kept...

Abscess or cancer? Please help, vibes to Sam!

Thankfully no head tilt, but the eye on the affected side was the first thing that tipped us off to a problem way back as it did not blink. Thankfully his balance is holding steady at the level it was at yesterday...diminished but not terrible. He can still walk up the stairs on his own...

Abscess or cancer? Please help, vibes to Sam!

Sam was holding steady until this afternoon, when he started act off balance and fell from the coffee table. Worry is that this is a sign of spreading problem to inner ear, not what we want! Don't know what else to do other than continue as I am and call the vet on Monday and perhaps seek a...

Abscess or cancer? Please help, vibes to Sam!

Well, today has been a hard one for us...just got back from the vet with Sam and the news is not good. The vet felt behind his ear today and said she felt something hard, which was not there last week. She said is either an abscess or a cancer. It's not very big and it doesn't feel too hard...

15 year old's nictitating membrane (third eyelid) permanently closed

On the off chance you haven't checked...look for an ear infection? The nerves that can be affected in ear problems control things like eyelid movement. My kittie Sam is now fighting off a severe middle ear infection that resulted in his eyelid not being able to close before we discovered it...

Ear Infection not better w/treatment - ideas? experiences?

So Sam is holding steady, acting a wee bit more like his old self, but is still tired and fighting this thing off. Last night, I went to see him and found a substantial (half dollar sized) amount of blood under his worst ear. He'd been laying on that ear with his head turned upside-down, and...

    slight swelling in upper lip

I had the same intuition as farleyv, I thought rodent ulcer. Here is a decent page about it and what might cause it (not known definitively): http://www.2ndchance.info/ulcers.htm Seems like the first order of treatment focuses on curing any secondary infection, eliminating allergies, and...

Is it a good idea to give pills to cats in a Greenies pill pocket?

It might slow the absorption of the drug for a short time, but not for long. I just gave Sam his appetite stimulant drug Mirtazapine in a pill pocket yesterday, and some say they've seen some effect (mood, some mewing, increased appetite) within an hour...for Sam it was more like two and a...

Ear Infection not better w/treatment - ideas? experiences?

otto - you are right about the quantity issue! We started to syringe feed Sam last night, and found that after we got him a few good tastes via the syringe, he went for the stuff that had spilled on the towel. Got the hint and then started just squirting pea sized amounts of recovery food...

Ear Infection not better w/treatment - ideas? experiences?

Update 2: Took Sam into the vet today, mostly because of concern re: dehydration and eating. Got him some subcutaneous fluids, and the vet on duty said he looked fine but was running a slight fever and said to put him back on the Zithromax...which I haven't started quite yet because I worry his...

Ear Infection not better w/treatment - ideas? experiences?

Update: Sam's life is still rough. He isn't eating today and we have started the Animax, the vet confirmed that antibiotics could cause problems when used for so long in some cats, so she told us to suspend the Zithromax for a few days too. CatNurse22 - good to know about the video otoscope...

Ear Infection not better w/treatment - ideas? experiences?

Hello all - please please help me and my cat Sam! He's got a middle ear infection w/likely ruptured eardrum that just doesn't seem to be getting better. Have been treating in accordance with vet recommendations, but my guy seems to be doing worse at this point - lethargy, anti-social behavior...
