I haven't tried it, but my aunt and uncle put balloons around the tree and that keeps their cats away. According to them, you only need one balloon to pop and they'll avoid it for good!
Have you tried the sand yet? If not, have a go at it and see what happens.
You might want to have him checked out by your vet too. I'm not an expert, but that seems to be a lot of #2 for one cat. With 3 cats we get about that much in a day and you've only got one cat.

I have to agree with missymotus. Be careful what you wish for. I end up trapped with my biggest cat (pushing 20 lbs) on one side of me and my hubbie on the other side with the blankets tucked under him. I can't move and it drives me crazy!
Now we've got a turf war going...
