How is the vet going to help him though if the leaf isn't visable any more because it's somewhere behind his eye? I'm not worried about it scratching his eye as much as I'm worried it might start to decay behind his eye and cause an infection. I'm just not sure how the vet will be able to help...

Are you sure your cat doesn't have cataracts? My cat had major cataracts and her eyes were super cloudy but it didn't seem to bother her much. She still got around fine even though practically her entire eye was cloudy.
