My 16 year old female (spayed) cat has been diagnosed by the vet with inappropriate elimination behavior. I think (and the vet agrees) that she may be (1) grieving for a companion who died 1 1/2 years ago, and (2) she is upset about the two young cats who were brought in to the house as kittens...
