Welcome to Sunday's Question of the Day!
Do you regularly include a comfort item when you
make your weekly or monthly shopping list or order?

Here are my favourite comfort buys: flowers and plants

My mother always returned home from shopping with a bunch of flowers and a bar of milk chocolate. At the time I thought cut flowers were a waste of money – why not buy a plant? I now realise that I’m no good at watering plants regularly. I don’t have such a bad conscience throwing out dead flowers than when I put a dried-out pot plant outside in the hope that it will recover!

As a young girl my comfort was a new lipstick (often pale pink à la Brigitte Bardot) or a sachet of shampoo from Woolworth’s cosmetics counter!

My ex-husband would buy a bag of “pick and mix” sweets before driving home with his shopping – a ritual which my daughters both approved of and supported! Not being a sweet-eater, I would perhaps have preferred something else but (tell the truth and shame the devil) in those far off days I have been known to buy a bottle of sherry which was certainly not on my shopping list. I won’t be able to forget that fact because on one occasion my youngest daughter dropped the bottle while taking it from the car and was so upset! Anytime the subject of sherry comes up, this story has to be repeated.

Today, particularly at springtime, when there is such a lot of choice, I often pick up one or 2 cheap bunches of flowers standing in buckets near the cash desks. I don’t feel guilty as they are no more expensive than candy and I have something bright and cheerful for 24 hours a day for at least a week.

Do you have a comfort item that you buy regularly just to make your life that little bit better?

I always just make sure that my pantry is stocked with any and all comfort foods I may need when I want them. I shop according to sales and buy multiples so I always have them on hand. As for comfort items that aren't food/drink....no, not really. I will on the very rare occasion buy a couple of scratch tickets, I really love scratch tickets, but I can't justify spending my money on it other than a rare treat. I bought a new pair of sunglasses last weekend...but my last pair have seen better days...
IDK, I primarily only buy stuff when the need calls for it....but even at that, I'm kind of stingy, so I will still wait for a sale...

My go to comfort item is fresh coffee beans. In fact, I picked up a bag yesterday straight from the roastery. I call it my guilty pleasure!
I also like fresh baked goods, e.g. muffins or biscottis. They both taste good with a cup of coffee. :yummy:

It's April 10th
Sorry - I know I wrote "10" the first time - then the title disappeared when I looked at the preview. Can't remember what happened next - it must have been one of the cats on the keyboard! Definitely not my fault. Too late to edit now - unless a member of staff decides it's a very serious error and has to be corrected. I wish I could edit it - such a stupid mistake!

Every once in a while, I get a bouquet of cut flowers. If they have the half baguettes and they have the crusty exterior I will get one. A whole baguette is way too much for just me. I love those with the Kerrygold butter which is the only butter I use for table use now.

Sometimes. It might be sourdough bread to go with soup for lunch. It might be a little something sweet or occasionally a nail polish. Once in awhile I’ve gotten cookies or chips. The local grocery store has fresh baked big chocolate chip cookies that really taste homemade and they are 2 for $.99.

I think I’ve mostly done this since having kids. It does seem to help me mentally to do something small for myself.

Lately I’ve been buying the little seedless mandarins that go by more than one brand name, but commonly Cuties. They’re just so cheerful and sweet and easy to eat. :)

It's no big deal, I think we can leave it.

:)

I usually treat myself to some nice tea. Sometimes I get a chai mix, but recently I've been really into Rooibos mixes with vanilla or honey.

Your flowers are gorgeous.

When I was doing my college internship, I lived in the part of a hospital for interns and such. And every Monday afternoon, on my way home from work, I would stop at a street florist and buy a bouquet of flowers. It wasn't that expensive and they were so pretty. I got to know the guy and he was a sweetheart. Just a little something to brighten my work week.

I guess my comfort purchase now is books.
