Hello,

I am starting a trial run with my cat, Milly, on the Koha brand LID duck pate and LID turkey pate. (Amazing, I found another canned food --I think? time will tell-- that Milly might consider eating. Cross your fingers for me.)

I notice that ginger and turmeric are listed in the ingredients. I wondered if anyone has tried these two foods, and if they had seen any negative digestive reactions in their cats with the abovementioned Koha?

(aside: lol. I just told my DH that the Koha is just slighly more expensive than what she already eats, and he made me laugh... he said, "That's Milly's mantra: 'I'm just slightly more expensive' ". Sheesh. Well, it's harder and more expensive to search around for foods a cat will eat, so I will just be happy if we have made slow progres$ in that regard!)

I've tried most of the Koha varieties, and the cats love them and are healthy on them. The only issue was the kangaroo flavours, which Snake didn't love that much and also got diarrhea from.

I know that in humans, ginger helps fight nausea and is regarded as healthy. I am not sure about cats, though.

Turmeric and ginger are also in the Koha duck stew that our cats love so much. Our cats, who have rather delicate digestive systems, seem to do fine on duck stew, though I only feed it occasionally.

It always takes several days in to learn how a food was handled by our kitties, and so I'm here to report that the Duck pate has gone over very well so far! (Not tried the turkey yet.)

HIGH activity & happiness level :bliss:
no poo issues :poop:

all seems well.:rockout:

I tried the duck stew with my kitten and it gave him bad diarrhea and tummy aches so I stopped feeding the brand.

The bone broth from The Honest Kitchen uses tumeric. I didn't have any issues when I was religiously giving it to my Tom after his surgery.

Hi, PushPurrCatPaws PushPurrCatPaws Sorry to barge in on your thread but could you post a pic of what KOHA LID food looks like? Or describe it? (I know it’s pate, but what kind? Smooth like FROMM or grainy like RAWZ beef variety) Thanks.

I got two free sample cans from a local independent pet store. The Duck pate I'm unable to take a photo of as the food went down my cat's gullet on Monday and Tuesday (nom nom nom). But I am thinking of trying her out on the Turkey pate starting tomorrow, so, if you would like, I can post a photo then.
LMK.

Glad your kitty liked it ;) I’d be happy to wait. I bought KOHA stew by accident instead of pate and had to throw the can away :( My silly cat just can’t figure out how to eat anything but the smoothest textures... he keeps licking and food keeps flying out of his mouth and food dish

:rolleyes3: I have to cut up my cat's pate into pea-sized cubes :rolleyes3:

She mostly likes pates, but will eat Pride flaked rabbit and flaked duck. I give that to her sometimes, and the Pride food must be presented in a "Devil's Tower"-shaped heap of food or I don't earn my server's tip.

:flail:Them cats really know how to make us work for those server’s tips, don’t they!
I had some luck with weruva pouches which are flaked so i might try a can of pride next time. We recently tried hound and gatos gamebird which is pate but very grainy and i could tell he liked it but just couldn’t lick it off of the plate so i had to put little clumps on the carpet (yuk!) and he was gobbling it up like a champ, same with Rawz beef... for now only decent food that he can eat without my help is Fromm, the search continues... :catrub:

Are you looking for a pate that is softer, more "soupy"? When I opened the Koha Duck pate, it was a bit soft. After refrigeration, of course, it hardens up a bit... you can then warm it a little and can cut it into, err, pea-sized cubes.

I've tried other duck pates that are also more soft than other meat pates. I wonder if that is common with duck in general?

The soupiness is not a problem, could always add water. And yes, i warm anything up after refrigerating. I just looked at Fromm pate vs Natures logic, first is smooth, kinda sticky, so when i spread it on a plate with my finger it ‘paints’ a line and the second is gritty and not sticky at all and does not spread like the first one... hmm, not sure if I’m making any sense at all. My cat will eat the smooth sticky kind and won’t eat the second. Just for the fun of it here are some pics:biggrin: .

Right out of the fridge

Spread out on a plate

Left - fromm, right - nature’s logic

The type of meat I believe would make a difference. Rawz turkey was smoother than Rawz beef, for instance.

Well. Today Milly turned her nose up at the LID Turkey pate version of Koha. I'll try refrigerating it, then see if she'll eat it semi-chilled later today but I'm not hopeful. I know her well enough by now to judge her first reactions to a flavor/food.

She ate the Duck pate version straightaway, but not the Turkey.

The Turkey seemed to me to have more "goo" in the can than the Duck. I am not a fan of "goo": if it is in excess, I always scrape away and drain that out of the can when I first open it. It was also just as soft as the Duck pate, but the Turkey had a stronger smell to it.

Here's the LID Turkey pate after just opening the can:

Here's the LID Turkey pate after I've scraped out and drained the "goo", and cut some slices for one of her dishes:

I cubed up a meal, and served it to Milly. She sniffed and strolled away.

So, there you go... I'll be getting more of the LID Duck pate soon, but not the Turkey flavor.

Thanks for your input, everyone!

If you want a really smooth pate food... Dave's is sold on chewy and was one of the smoothest foods I have ever fed my kitty! It seems to have a lot of moisture and I couldn't even cut it up like other pates, I had to scoop it out of the can with a spoon.

Rawz chicken and turkey cans are also extremely smooth. I think the "goo" in the cans might be supplements/preservatives.

I think the gelatinous goo in canned cat foods could be aspic from (parts of) the meat(s). Or it could also partly be either the agar-agar, carrageenen, or guar gums, if the foods have those? Or a combo of both? Whatever it is, my cat cannot handle eating it. She has allergies/asthma and the "goo" is very mucous-producing for her.

PushPurrCatPaws PushPurrCatPaws thanks for the pics ;) not sure if my picky kitty will like it but I’ll try a can anyways.

You might want to try Rawz brand since they don’t have any gums or carrageenan in their formulas.
The turkey recipe for example is this (my cat sort of liked it):

INGREDIENTS: Turkey, Turkey Liver, Turkey Broth, Potassium Chloride, Fenugreek Seeds, Natural Flavor, Choline Chloride, Salt, Vegetable Broth, Taurine, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Ethylenediamine Dihydroiodide, Folic Acid.

There is some of that aspic on top of the loaf but it’s not as thick as in food with gums. It should be just broth that jelled.
