Hello everyone.. My King Arthur have a problem with his skin. When I bring him to vet,the doctor said it was skin allergic. When I ask his pervious owner,he's said it was flea shampoo that cause his skin to be like that also when he was small,he always having the same problem. Skin allergic. So right now I bath him once in 3 day. But his hair fall a lot after taking bath. It's that normal or it because his shampoo that the doctor gave. And is there any suggestion shampoo for Persian cat? How to make him bath without any struggle? He's doesn't scratch people even his nail is so sharp. One thing that I noticed is after bath his hair always looks dirty even I scrub him. His color is white, orange and light brown.

Why do you have to bathe him so often?  That might be causing the dry skin.  You are washing all the normal body and hair oils out.

Seconded about the bathing frequency.  Not sure who/why you were told to do this, but it does sound too often.

You said something about a flea shampoo??  I much prefer the spot on treatments myself.  They are very effective, and if he does have a skin allergy, you aren't putting anything on his skin for him to react to.

My kitten had some sort of skin problem shortly after we got him - it looked like dandruff on his head and around his ears.  The vet gave him some various things - creams and a steriod shot from memory, but we think this made it much much worse.  I think there are some vets out there that just prescribe without really working out what the problem is; there was certainly no testing in our case.  Anyway, it cleared up when we stopped the vet treatment - just our experience, not advocating against vets.  Our conclusion was that it was stress related.  The transit to us, separation from his mum and siblings, then a bout of vet visits/treatments (he also got a cold, and the vet said -erroneously we think - that he had ear mites), were all a bit much for the wee fellow.  A few weeks of normal loving home-life with good food and he was perfect.

So, the other thing I'd check is food.  A lot of nutrition goes into maintaining a cat's skin and fur; if it looks shabby, its a good sign there's something wrong or he is not getting all the nutrition he needs.  A lot of cats can also be allergic to grains; this is the primary ingredient in kibble.  I'd transition him onto a wet food diet only, using canned food that is free of grains, and as free of vegetables and other stuff they can't access, as you can find  (remember that a cat needs nutrition from animal sources, aka meat).  A raw diet is another option and what I feed to my cat - have a look at the raw nutrition forum on this site if you want loads of info.

Then you may also want to look at the fat content in his diet- it may not be enough.  Protein and fat are the key building blocks for cat nutrition - it sounds, and is, very very different to human needs!  These three blog posts will give you something to think about:

http://www.wayofcats.com/blog/idiopathic-seizure-disorder-could-it-be-grains-and-fat/21137

The last things are of course, try to eliminate stress.  And if you do bath your cat (we do it once a month), use a special cat specific shampoo that is hypoallergenic - and don't use ones with 'essential oils' or heavy smells.  You want something very very gentle and ok for a cat (they will lick their fur to clean themselves, so this is important, as is rinsing thoroughly).  By the way, you mention you'd like to know how to bathe without stress...give it a break for a while (unless medically you are told and believe otherwise), as you want to reduce cat stress right now.  There are a few 'how to bathe your cat' posts on the site - this was a recent one for an instance when a cat not used to bathing needed a bath: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/254875/how-to-clean-a-feces-caked-cat

If it is a grooming thing that inspires you to bathe, have a hunt around for grooming long haired cats - I know lots of people have talked about this too.  I can't comment; my boy is short haired with only one coat.  Here's a few links to other sites:

Hope he gets better!

Well the vet tell me to bath him often. Maybe that's why his hair fall a lot after bath. For his skin problem, it's getting better n well it's not because the shampoo the doctor gave but it's oil medicine. It's malaysia medicine. It won't make him sick if he licks it. Because its came from herbs. About his diet, I gave him wet food. Maybe I should check everything his food for now on. Also until now i stop bath him so often. I don't want make him stress out. Big thank you to you both...:)
I will read all link you gave me. Thank you.:D

So happy to hear he is doing better. Sometimes the local natural medicines are the best. You are most welcome.  Please post some pictures of him on the Fur Pictures forum. We all want to see him.

Glad there's some improvement!

If it doesn't continue/he gets worse, please look at the ingredients in the medicine the Doctor gave him.  I just say this as I don't know enough about the situation.  Eg: I'm not sure if the Doctor is a Vet - if a human Dr, they won't necessarily know what is safe for a cat.  And also, just because it is a herbal recipe does not make it safe - there are some herbs that are fine and healthy for cats, and others that will make them sick.  I'm a bit paranoid about this to the extent that I check every plant we might want to plant in our garden to make sure they are safe if Kato bites them (he's curious).  And even in commercial cat products, there are still things in there that shouldn't be there.  I use this list http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/poison-control/plant-list-cats.  Again, not sure if it is useful in a Malaysian context!

Best wishes.

Pet Pics is the forum for other animals besides cats. You'll probably get more people looking at your pictures if you post them in the Fur Pictures forum.

Taking him off all wet food (which cats really need) won't stop him from shedding. Are you brushing or combing him? It helps to increase the frequency during shedding season, for example every day or every other day instead of once or twice a week.

Something else to consider - I was successful in changing the diet to NO GRAIN food.  Just a thought.  I always consider diet first when problems show themselves. :)

Okay, but don't you have other choices of food without grains there?  No matter - we each do what we can.  I guess I was thinking more on the no-grain canned/moist food type.  Again, it was just a thought that I offered. :)

Please, don't become a backyard breeder. There are too many unwanted cats/kittens out there already.  You say you want the best for your cat. Get him neutered, then.  It is not fair to put him through the hormone-driven stress of needing to mate.

Try fish oil, buy the gel tabs, break and mix in with wet food. Try to buy dry food with omega 3.
