Of course here nobody can seem to get the vaccine, not even all school children but they are talking about vaccinating all the inmates

I was one that was totally against the shot! But,when faced with a chance of death for my kids--the shot was a no brainer--they got it.
2 of my 4 are high risk.1 is so HIGH that he gets pnemonia again,and we undergo immune suprescent tests.And he WILL be hospitalized.
As I've said, in my home flu shots are NOT a choice...they are simply a must.Seth will have to have them for the rest of his life.And anyone in his home,will also have to have them for HIS safety.
I am NOT one complaining about me getting the shot.I would soooooooo much rather high risk people get it.If and WHEN they ever get enough for the rest of us, then I will get mine.Until then, I have to hope and pray--that my husband and I do NOT come into contact with the H1N1.

As I understand it, it is the health department in each state and county, god help us, that basically decides how the shipments are divided - not the federal government. My county is giving some doses to private practices but most to public health agencies. My own doctor has been getting some, but, of course, they're immunizing children and pregnant ladies, which makes sense - I'm in line due to a chronic illness, but I'm good with the decision to date. Other counties are doing it in other ways.

I understood the Obama girls got their shots when the rest of the DC school population got theirs - and mom and dad are still in line. Actually, I'm not sure I agree with that - I think at least the President should have been immunized.

Re prison populations, assuming the reports are right - I wonder if they're thinking of a lot of the inmates being right in the target age group, obviously a lot of contact (even more than a college campus dorm), and the possibility of a massive breakout in an enclosed facility, expanding to the greater population through contact with guards and visitors. Also, would it be all inmates or the same target groups - juveniles, pregnant inmates, and those with compromised health?

But, yeah, I was thinking a lot of people who didn't care if they ever got the shot are probably very annoyed they can't get it now.

PS - see the news that it's confirmed that a cat in Iowa did get the swine flu, probably from the humans in her home. Couple of ferrets too.

I must do some research on this, but does anyone know if an egg-allergic person should not have it, despite being in a high risk group? My friend is is aged 80 with severe dementia lives in a care home and I have been asked as her executor to give permission for her to have it. No one at the home seems to know the position. I am seeing her doctor next week when I am in the UK.

The Swine Flu Vaccine Screw-Up
Ehrenreich is a very prominent scholar and writer, whose books and articles I've had to read in many instances throughout my education in sociology. This is what she has to say about the swine flu vaccine ...it makes me mad. It goes on and on but I am not quoting the whole thing ...just click on the link ..

If, in fact, there's a political parable here, it's about Big Government's sweetly trusting reliance on Big Business to safeguard the public health: Let the private insurance companies manage health financing; let profit-making hospital chains deliver health care; let Big Pharma provide safe and affordable medications. As it happens, though, all these entities have a priority that regularly overrides the public's health, and that is, of course, profit -- which has led insurance companies to function as "death panels," excluding those who might ever need care, and for-profit hospitals to turn away the indigent, the pregnant, and the uninsured.

As for Big Pharma, the truth is that they're just not all that into vaccines, traditionally preferring to manufacture drugs for such plagues as erectile dysfunction, social anxiety, and restless leg syndrome. Vaccines can be tricky and less than maximally profitable to manufacture. They go out of style with every microbial mutation, and usually it's the government, rather than cunning direct-to-consumer commercials, that determines who gets them. So it should have been no surprise that Big Pharma approached the H1N1 problem ploddingly, using a 50-year old technology involving the production of the virus in chicken eggs, a method long since abandoned by China and the European Union........

I'm pretty sure she shouldn't get it. I'm not sure what the other options are...

Edit: Hubby just looked it up, and there are some non-egg based vaccines being produced for those that are high risk but have egg allergies.

If she's elderly though, she was probably already exposed to it previously, and most likely already has some resistance to H1N1. If you can find a non-egg based vaccine, I would recommend it.

Yes, I also read about our methods being antiquated when it comes to producing vaccines. Again, all I want is those people who are at risk to get the shot first. I know that there are some people dying who, apparently, were not at risk. And, good heavens, I am very sorry for that. But when I see the prisoners in Cuba will get their shots, and there are all these kids and adults here that need it, yes, I do blame the government for that. And I will stand by what I say. When my grandson has flare ups of asthma, and has to take breathing treatments over and over every day, it irks me. When my daughter calls and says, "the doctor wants to put him in the hospital", I get a little upset. Then I turn around and see a grade school in line for the shot and you can't tell me they are all at risk, how would that make you feel? Two of my other grandkids had a mild case. But even a mild case, could very well be life threatening to him. I am just asking for equality in distribution. That is all.

I personally feel that ALL children should get the shot(if they want it that is).Not all of them are at as high risk as some others,but could be exposed to high risk kids all the time.
2 of my 4,have to take breathing treatments all the time.Every 4 hours for Seth,and Jordan when theirs flare up.They are BOTH on inhalers,and Singulair.

EXACTLY.

I think any child in the school system should be able to get the vaccine if wanted.

I am curious, what is the criteria for getting the shot where you are?

Here:

Only the following individuals may attend the clinics listed below:
· Individuals under the age of 65 who
- have underlying medical conditions;
- are household members of children under the age of six (6) months
- are household members of individuals with problems with their immune systems (examples: cancer treatment, HIV/AIDS, transplant patients, kidney dialysis, taking long term steroids and some other drugs);
· Children between six (6) months and less than five (5) years of age;
· Pregnant women with underlying medical conditions or healthy women over 20 weeks of pregnancy;
· Health care workers
