If you're looking for a decent brand that will last a while and doesn't cost too much, check into the SanDisk Sansa models.

I think the answer will going to depends if you want a gadget big like and Ipod or something more small like a Ipod Nano, of course the capacity is more small meanwhile the gadget is more small...
The natīs recomendation is great too... I have saw it...

I have an IPOD Nano.....and I can't speak enough to how great it is.

The battery lasts forever. I can go days without charging it (I use it while at work since I work in the computer tech industry).

It also holds a ton of music.

IMO it's inexpensive for what it accomplishes. Good luck!!

I agree with all that was said before me. What I will add is that once you find one you think will fit your needs, do a little reseach online with reviews by actual users to see if there are any little problems with the device that may not be obvious. Here are three places to check reviews by actual users and industry pros:

http://www.consumersearch.com/mp3-players
Consumer Search is wonderful because it gives you pricing information, availability information, and several review sources in one place.

http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/
The CNET site has many featurs like an mp3 finder where you plug in the minimum requirements you want and it gives you a list of mp3 players that fit them. It also has numerous videos showing the features of mp3 players and how to use them.

http://www.testfreaks.com/mediaplayers/
Test Freaks is great because there are many (sometimes hundreds) of actual user reviews (not expert reviews), and they can be ranked by whatever category you chose. I love this site.

I have used these sites for research in the past and really thought they were helpful. Hope these help!

I have an ipod touch, I'd never buy it if it was up to me but it was a gift..
I absolutely love it, the only downside is that it can't be used as a phone..
I read my ebooks on it, read the news, check my email (it can even open word and powerpoint files and my entire campus has free wireless for students so it works out really well), listen to online radio, talk to my friends on AIM and any other messanger, check facebook....
Ever since I started using it, I haven't been carrying my laptop around with me, which is great because I carry enough stuff as it is..
Before I had the ipod touch, I had my music on my phone with a 4 gb microsd memory card..I liked it that way because I didnt' have to carry two things, both phone and ipod..

I've been thinking about getting an MP3 player too and I have a really stupid question- how do you get the music on it? I know how the iPod works, my sister has one, but any other player? how does the music get on there? Yes, totally showing my complete lack of technical knowledge here

DOS.... now that is something I haven't heard in a long while! I remember taking DOS in college!

As for MP3 or Ipods.. We don't have one but DH and I want one!! My stereo has an Ipod base, so I think it can be used to record music.
