Registering my new aby kitten

For those of you who haven't seen my post about Merlin, I just got a 5 month old aby kitten. He's been litter registered with CFA by the breeder. He's considered pet quality, but I would still like to register him with CFA. The form asks for first and second choice for names. I'd like to keep the name the breeder gave him if possible and haven't come up with a second choice so far. Is there any place I can check to find out if a name is already taken before I send the form in?

Since the breeder gave him that name it should not be taken.

So long as the breeder hasn't used that name before it should be fine, same name under different prefix is usually ok.

Merlin is fine, but to be on the safe side, you might want to add a little; e.g. Magic Merlin.

Charlie's registered name is Charlie Wonka.

Would it be okay to put the variation of the name as my second choice, or should I come up with something completely different?

You can put it as a 2nd choice.

Its your choice. You could even spell it slightly different as your "2nd choice".

When I called the vet to make an appointment, the receptionist got it written down as "Merlot".
