vocalization
Hi, im new to these forums.. I joined because i have a question.
I got a new cat on Canada's Day from my cousin, she's a year old. Ever since we got her she has not been a vocal cat.. But when she did meow it was very quiet. Yesterday my brother came home from work and she started to meow constantly and louder also. Not only was she being more vocal, but she was also trying to fit into the tiniest places around the house -something she hasnt done before. Last night we put her in the basement (where she sleeps because we have 3 birds and we cant trust her around them alone yet) and she seemed very uneasy... Which was weird. She also crawled into a corner of the basement where there was only enough room for her to sit, and just sat there watching me. She has never done that before. We thought that maybe it was because her litter was dirty, so i cleaned it about 4 times yesterday -no change in her behavior. We thought that something happened yesterday that might of scared her or something but when i woke up this morning and opened the baement door.. She was at the bottom of the stairs waiting.. Then she ran up the stairs, something she never does.. She usually waits for me to come down and get her.. She has still meowing constantly today and she has been following me EVERYWHERE i go, i went in the washroom and she sat at the door pawing to come in and meowing louder than ever. We dont know what happened.. Does she want attention? Because me and my brother give her attention constantly.. We think that maybe she saw something in the basement that frightened her and made her uneasy ever since.. Or maybe she is pregnant and starting to look for a place to put her kittens, but my cousin told us she was an indoor cat and has never been outside.. We dont know what could be the problem.. Anyone have any advice? -Sorry for the very long post.. |

That could very definitely be the reason. It could also be that she doesn't like being locked in the basement. I wouldn't either.
I would suggest keeping her closer to the family; she seems to be a very social cat. Perhaps confining her to a bedroom where there are all the sounds and smells of people instead of a dark, scary basement would help her as well. |

Sorry, I used the word "locked". What I mean is, it doesn't seem from your description that she likes the basement much. Maybe a bedroom is a better fit for her.
Good luck!

Also, during the day she use to be active and roam around the house.. But now all she does is lay down beside me on the couch and sleep all day. We think it might be because she doesnt sleep at night, but we dont understand whats wrong, she's been fine with the basement before.... -Her litter and food/water are down there* |

We figured out what was wrong with Truffles.. She was an expectant mother! She gave birth to a healthy kitten last night around 9:30 ... My cousin who i got her from had no idea that she was pregnant before he gave her to us.
I am now the proud owner of 3 birds, one cat and a newborn kitten! ![]() |

Wow, thats suprising for sure! Congrats!
![]() I would make sure to get both of them checked out by a vet. I am wondering if there may be more babies in her? it sounds odd that she had just one.

It is odd, she's a first time mother so probably would have a small litter but over a year so should have had more then one. I'd take her into the vet to make sure she's ok!
But congrats!! Where are the pictures? ![]() |

Well im not to sure how old she is but my cousin said around a year ... She could be older or younger..
And after the kitten was born she looks alot skinnier, is there any way other than going to a vet to try and see if she has more kittens ? But even now she is still meowing constantly upstairs, and when i follow her downstairs to her kitten she becomes quiet.. Her meows soundd like she is trying to tell me something or ask for help. It sounds raspy and sounds like she is saying "oww" -is that normal after giving birth? She also puts her ears back alot.. **Im not to sure how to add pictures to this forum since im new.. ![]() |
