The girl is 11 years old. She went into labour on her wedding day. Her husband, the baby's father is 19 years old. Apparently he is now charged with having sex with a minor.

They can marry, but it's illegal to have sex?!

The part where I'm confused is that they issued a marriage certificate to an 11 year old. Even in the more backwards states (like mine) in the US, you typically have to be 14 with parental consent.

Oh my god how ridiculous. This kind of stuff happens all the time among the roma (gypsy)population of bulgaria. I am from there, and it has always been typical for girls of 12 to be pregnant and then beg on the streets claiming their baby was born when they were just a child ...It is sad the government does nothing to aid this gypsy minority because they are victims of the circumstances a lot of times, being born to families that don't have a lot to teach them, most of the time being born to mothers who are just 12 or 13 years older than the children and fathers who are unknown...I wish the government would do something to aid them, but the population of Bulgarians is so racist, they signing petitions against affirmative action. I have been asked multiple times to sign petitions against it and of course I never did, but so many people are serious about it. Here is the article from a Bulgarian news source :

The mother of the 11-year-old Roma girl, who gave birth last week, had been present at her wedding, Darik radio reports.

The mother previously misled the authorities telling them she was in Spain when her daughter gave birth in Bulgaria's southern city of Sliven, immediately after the wedding, probably over fears she could face legal charges.

On Tuesday, the Roma from the Sliven “Nadezhda” district staged a protest rally in front of the hospital where the young mother, Korteza, is listed with her newborn daughter, shouting demands for the two to be released under their care.

The Prosecutor in Sliven ordered a probe in the case against the father, 19-year-old Zhelyazko, over having sexual intercourse with a minor. Zhelyazko, the girl's mother Rayna, and her mother-in-law have all been called for questioning.

In the meantime, Rayna signed a declaration she would take care of the mother and the baby while Roma explained their traditions call for the bride to be a virgin and how Korteza became pregnant immediately after her sexual contact with Zhelyazko.

I am sure this is the first time a father of a pregnancy like this has been charged, and that is why the story became famous- because I know this is something that happens very often. They keep trying to claim it is their traditions, but they ignore the laws of the country they live in,you can't just do whatever you want based on your traditions :rolleyes : This is exactly like in the US, where mormons may claim polygamy is their tradition but that doesn't mean US laws will allow polygamy, it is still against the law.

Is this a hoax? Because I just can't believe that people are really that stupid. Sounds to me like a pedophile/child molester in disguise. What's he going to do when she hits 16? Get a divorce and find another young girl to manipulate?



Edit - Just to clarify, I do not think that it is funny she is pregnant or married to a 19 year old man.

The point I thought was a little ridiculous and humorous is that "You can get married, but you can't have sex!" To get married means that at one point or another, probably sooner rather than later (if not already) you will have sex.

But of course, that's only taking it at "face value" and not integrating the facts that a.) Underage marriage is not legally recognized, and b.) It is always illegal to sleep with and/or impregnate an 11 year old girl.

This is no hoax - why would it be? There is a whole world outside of the United States where this happens every day. It just doesn't get famous.
You are looking at this as an American, through the lenses of your culture, but remember - not the whole world is American and share your belief system.
I am not saying this is right, in any way shape or form. What it is not, IMO, is funny, stupid, ridiculous...
I do not think if this boy was a "pedophile/child molester in disguise" as you are calling him; he was going to be marrying this girl, and who knows if take responsibility for him and the child? Who knows if he really had feelings for this girl? Again - take the "westernized filter" from the eyes of your mind for a second and consider that it is possible, it really is.
IMHO there is more to this story then meet the eyes, and we should not forget that they are not Americans, and have a whole different cultural background.

Who am I to judge them, and why is my culture better than theirs? THEIR beliefs - their lives... IMO need to be respected. It is their culture, and it is not affecting my life or the way I live. That is my opinion. IMHO it is quite hard to judge cultures and religions, especially when you know nothing about them and their situation.

You should look at the picture- she looks at least 20...But he rescued her from the playground, that speaks child molester to me...It's disgusting to think about.

It is ridiculous that they ignore all kinds of laws and have a wedding that is completely illegitimate and the sad part is- I am sure the entire community participated in that wedding and they were toasting to the groom and bride without even stopping to think how wrong this is. And I think the whole issue about the roma (gypsy) minority in Bulgaria is ridiculous and sad. I don't know what it is about the roma culture- but I have seen girls aged 12 or 13 pregnant it happens so often. It is so sad because they live in communities separate from the rest of society that are so poor, their houses barely standing on the ground, they go to separate schools that only serve their districts, and to me they are victims and not really at fault, because there is no one to educate them to be any different and they are ostracized and discriminated against so much, even though on paper of course discrimination is illegal. But, it can't disappear into thin air, the government has to do something to aid them economically. I was surprised to see this story, I don't know why someone took and interest and wrote a story about this girl. Maybe because there are charges against the father.
