Name: Abby Helen Sex: Female Year of Birth: 2001 Breed: Domestic Shorthair Fur Color: Bicolor Eye Color: Green Biography: [PICTURE COMING SOON!] Abby is extremely shy and skittish -- so much so that she prefers to live in my father's room, segregated from the other kitties in our family. She loves my father and mother dearly, but will run and hide even from them if she thinks they intend to pick her up. Recently, Abby has graciously accepted visits from Dylan and St. John, and she's allowed me to approach her and pet her a little bit -- a major breakthrough! We hope someday she'll be able to live among the other cats without fear. Abby's humans are CarolPetunia's parents; her kitty family is Dylan Ishmael, Sassy Lane, Clyde Lee (Abby's son!), Pearl Noelle, and St. John Dundee. |
Arrival Story: In March of 2003, a shelter volunteer noticed Abby in her neighborhood and started putting out food for her. After a couple of weeks, she trapped Abby and brought her to the shelter... and the next morning, they found her with five beautiful new kittens, one of whom became my little Clyde! I knew that Abby was his mother -- couldn't miss it, because he looked exactly like her. But Abby seemed to be semi-feral, and her terror was such that she would snarl and lash out viciously at anyone who opened her cage. I felt responsible for her, so I worked with her until I finally managed to get her out of her cage and hold her for a few seconds -- and I found that as soon as she knew I had her, she went completely docile. I started holding her for longer and longer every day, sometimes out on the screened cat porch, sometimes even walking around with her. Eventually, Abby got adopted by a woman who seemed to understand her problems and special needs -- but it turned out she didn't get it at all. She actually used a vacuum cleaner attachment to sweep poor Abby out from under the bed where she was hiding all the time! I persuaded her to give Abby back, and my mother and I met her at the shelter. We couldn't bear to see Abby go back into that cage, so my wonderful mom adopted her and worked tirelessly to win her trust. Now Abby plays with Mom and lets Mom brush her every day! She's doing much, much better. Favorite Food & Treats: Abby is a light eater and generally prefers dry food, but she does enjoy the sliced ham my mom likes to give her. Favorite Toys: Long ago, I made Abby a dangle toy out of plastic lanyard lacing and some fluffy pompoms from the craft store -- and she still loves that old bedraggled thing! |
