I make an ear solution to clean my dogs ears and i was just wondering if it was safe for kittens, cats? It is called purple power ear solution. isoprophyl alcohol, gentian violet, and boric acid powder. It helps keep the ears dry and clean. The gentian violet is an antifungal. It is excellent for killing any ear mites. Is this ok to use?

It won't hurt, but it is more firepower than you need for routine cleaning- the boric acid powder is antifungal too.
I'd leave out the genetian violet- it is not meant to be used for long periods of time- it can be irritating to soft tissue when used for too long. It is also toxic when ingested which is a consideration with cats and especially kittens.

I usually use a mix of alcohol, witch hazel, and a few drops of vinegar for mild cleaning, or Chloro Hexi flush if I feel there may be an ear issue of some sort brewing.

plain olive oil will work out heavy wax build up just a drop or two in each ear. or for heavier cleaning 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. two drops in each ear squish ear around and drain with cloth, paper towel or cotton ball. only use these once a month. :)

Mineral oil is supposed to be better than olive oil, not sure why though. My vet used an oil-based ear cleaner to get all the ear mite gunk out of Eve's ears.

Wouldn't alcohol set their little ears on fire if they had even a slight case of ear mites?? Or a scratch? I'd be afraid to use it,even tho it does dry out moisture.

Witch hazel is toxic to cats too.

I've used olive oil with moderate success. Zissou was super annoyed about it though.

I wouldn't think it would hurt to use it.Why not call your Vet and ask to be sure?The only bad thing about the mix......I used it all the time on my Cocker Spaniels ears.......is that it turns everything purple!!!
Believe it or not, the alcohol doesn't hurt them when used in the Blue Power solution because of the Gentian Violet solution.

Just to be on the safe side, I would call your vet and discuss it with him/her before putting any homemade liquid in your kittys ear. :)

yeh the alcohol and vinegar soloution was for swimmers ear too! you put it in after you get out of the pool or bath when you have water in your ears. you can also make the mix 60/40 with vinear 60% and alcohol 40%. it will burn a bit like it does to us but it's only cleaning and drying the ear. it won't cause any long term damage. the olive oil will sooth the ear after the treatment the next day if you are worried.
