Anyone know the difference? I have always avoided scoopable litters because I figured that means it doesn't clump as well..Is this true, or are they the same thing?

Okay here is the thing ... all scoopable are not clumping... Ie wood pellets they "gel" but dont clump and can be scooped ... But for most the words are interchangable

Yes, for clay litters they are they same. Scoopable means it makes clumps so you can scoop it. Clumping means it makes clumps so you can scoop it. Unless it's one like Sharky mentioned it's identical, just a choice of words.

Do the crystals clump so you can scoop them though?

We don't even have Tidy Cats here..Boo.

Crystals I think you have to take the poo out and it absorbs the pee or something, then you have to change the whole box. I think they'd hurt their tootsies, but cats don't act like they mind much.

I think the scoopable clumps the poo and the crystals absorb the pee. Not sure. I guess in a way they are kind of the same.

I use "Jonny Cat Scoop". It clumps and you can scoop it out. Plus it says "Clumping Cat Litter" on the bag.

Most of the litter's I've bought are "scoopable" - and I've also used kinds that are "clumpable."


Scoopable means that when your cat pees, the pee is simply absorbed into the crystals/pellets/etc - but you can still "scoop" essentially, because when you scoop - you remove the feces.

So you can scoop the feces out, but the urine is absorbed into the litter.

Clumpable means that when your cat urinates, it forms a hard clump so when you scoop out the litter box, the urine clumps and the feces are removed - and all of the remaining litter is clean.

See the difference? I hope that description makes sense.

So all clumpable litters are scoopable, but not all scoopable litters are clumpable. Gosh, that reminds me of those riddles that you have to solve in IQ tests.....

Either way - I'm no litter manufacturer, that's simply my "experienced" opinion.... :)

The tidy cat crystals litter is really soft- so it's great for kitties after surgeries,etc. It's completely dust free- which is great if you have allergies or if your kitties have allergies. It doesn't clump- but it does absorb really well. One jug will last one kitty a month- you scoop the poop out every day, and the crystals asorb the urine, so if you stir around the crystals when u change the litter, it helps the asorbtion. I personally dump out the litter before 1 month just because i'm a stickler for clean litter boxes....but it does work very well. / Tidy Cats did just come out with a new Tidy Cat Crystals Scoopable formula- my sister uses it, i haven't tried it yet- but she says she really likes it. :)

So maybe people just use these terms all willy-nilly. :confused: To me, a litter that doesn't clump pee isn't scoopable.
