View Full Version : What kitty litter do you use and why?

We bought Swheat Scoop (I think that's what it was called), which is a wheat based kitty litter. It's flushable and clumps, so we can just scoop out everything, just change it fully once a month, and there's no problems with tracking.

I'm just noticing it's getting a little whiffy - especially if the house has been closed up all day, and our last litter wasn't like that. This is our first cat since we've been in the US, and I think there's a much bigger range of litter over here, so still deciding what I'll use permanently (lucky the cat's adaptable to changes). :)

The new Fresh Step litter with activated carbon.

I tried it out because it was new and I always try out anything that is new. So far I am pleased.

I use “Words Best Cat Litter” (multi cat formula even though I have one cat) because it’s flushable.

The day I got my cat I sent my niece into the pet store to buy cat litter and food. I specifically requested flushable litter and that’s the brand she happened to buy.

It turns out that I really like it. More important is Chester likes it and has no problems using it. It’s made from corn but the texture is like what I remember to be good old fashioned cat litter but it lasts much longer. And because it’s flushable I do not have any disposal problems.

My apartment is closed up all day and night because I use the air conditioner all summer and I do not have any smell. Actually this is something that did concern me.

I don’t notice any smell but worried that it was because I am used to being here. So I asked my mother to check things out. She says my house does not smell. If it did she would be the first to tell me.

I used to use Fresh Step but I cannot stand the chemically smell so I switched to Feline Pine or Exquisicat Pine which is the PetSmart brand I think.

I LOVE it, my cats love it (my foster prego momma cat doesn't like it much) but it smells so nice, a natural pine smell. The urine turns to sawdust and doesn't have the ammonia smell if you don't clean it for a few days like Fresh Step did. Plus they make special litterboxes (I don't have them yet but I am planning on getting some soon) but it is 2 boxes in one and the top one has holes in it so the sawdust sifts through and the pellets of pine do not. SO you can just dispose of the sawdust and not throw out the unused pellets in the process.

I use pretty much any kind of fresh step scoopable and tidy cats scoopable, and I often mix them- start with a box full of fresh step and then add tidy cats after scooping.
I find that they are the best value for the money, and I usually have coupons for both of them. They clump the best and are pretty good for odor control. Each has pluses and minuses. I think fresh step clumps better. Tidy cats has a better smell (with the exception of small spaces, which is stinky) and it is less dusty. I really like the fresh step cedar scoop, because it has a nice clean woodsy smell, but it is more money.

I forgot.. I also use the exisiquicat brand once in awhile, its not bad at all and a good price. I just had some many fresh step coupons lately that I have like 10 boxes in storage right now! With four cats kitty litter expenses are high.

I use World's Best Cat Litter because it's flushable. Also, our former vet suggested we try something all natural because it might be causing some of Callie's constipation problems. I love the fact that we can flush it away, but I don't think it's helped much with Callie's constipation problems.

In the process of getting chicken feed, but the salespeople at the feed store(I graduated with them) like to play games with me. :) They actually know I don't have chickens anymore & find it funny I want the feed for cat litter.

Right now, I have 1 box Feline Pine for Twitch & Lily(upstairs), 1 box Arm & Hammer's New Natural Litter for Twitch & Lily(upstairs), 1 box Tidy cat small spaces for Lily(bedroom), 1 box Cat Attract for Ophelia(helped deter her from marking!), 1 box cat attract & Tiday Cat s/w crystals mix for Ophelia, 1 box tidy cats w/ crystals for Ophelia, 1 box tidy cats small spaces for Ophelia, 1 box Arm & Hammer's New Natural Litter for Damita & Chico(bathroom) & 1 box Tidy Cats crystals for Damita & Chico(bathroom). Plus, I have 1 litterbox in the garage w/ whatever litter's cheapest. I have 5 boxes in the shop with whatever litter's the cheapest, too.

I don't want to try WBCL because it's so spendy, so I'm just skipping it & trying chicken feed. I wasn't impressed with Scoop Away, Special Kitty, Feline Pine scoopable, or Swheat. The Swheat stunk to high heaven after a few days of use, even if I scooped 2x a day. The Feline Pine has an odd texture, so the blind foster cat & Ophelia won't use it. The urine smell gets really strong fast, so w/ Twitch & Lily's box I end up changing it 2x a week, so I am in the process of discontinueing(sp?) use of it. I think "normal" Arm & Hammer is OK, but wasn't overly impressed with it as it makes Lily sneeze. The Tidy Cats is less dusty. I like Arm & Hammer's new litter as it covers smell rather well for 2 cats pooping in 1 box in the bathroom(scooped 2 + x a day). The small spaces works OK in my bedroom, but Lily always poops before I go to bed so I scoop ASAP.

There's a novel for you.

I don't know if I screwed up in buying the chicken feed but it was sooo bad. I scooped all the time and I could still smell ammonia when I walked into the house. I have 8 boxes for 6 cats but still. That means less urine in each box and the house reaked.

All they had at the feed store here was the one I bought and a medicated one. I didn't think the medicated one sounded right but was I wrong? I would love for the chicken feed to work because the price was amazing. But so far no way I will stick to Feline Pine. How is chicken feed on odor for you guys? Mainly the ammonia smell. Exactly which kind of feed are you buying? Why did I have bad luck?

I am using WBCL and I love it for the odor control (absolutely no smell noticed in a small room in the summer) and the clumping. However, it is very dusty and I have little yellow pawprints all over. I am glad it is organic or I would be super worried about that dust.

I received two bags of Clorox crystals as a gift from a co-worker, and I have been hesitant to try it. First, I don't like that it is silica, and second, I didn't want the new little girl getting freaked by a new home, new food, new litter, etc. It is a sin not to use it, so I think I will donate it to the rescue group I work for. Has anyone used it? It is as good as it claims to be?

Fresh step scoop-22 cats and i get SO SO MANY coupons from this company the litter is SO cheap after coupons/sales. Its my fav litter anyway because I love its odor control-doesnt get stale as soon as the other litters I have used. I also use tidy cats crystal blend clay for my two cats who are kept apart from the rest(they are cat aggressive) RJ

WalMart's Special Kitty clumping litter - its good with odors and love the clumping litter anyway. I HATE regular clay litter :)

This is what I use as well. I like it because it clumps but it has the tendency to track all over the house. So I mix this with Purina Clay kitty litter and so far the mix is awesome. Tracking is cut down, clumping is good, and my house smells just fine.

Usually I don’t have this problem. Or so I thought.....but somehow Chester got his foot wet. :paw: :paw: :paw: :paw:

This morning not only did I have little yellow foot prints on the floor, apparently he shook his foot and managed to fling little bits of wet litter all over the room.

My little darling is quite the digger and flinger, and as much as I like WMCL it is so expensive everytime (like now) she uses her box and flings half of it out all I think of is maybe it would be cheaper to let her go on shredded dollar bills.....

Fresh Step scoopable. I actually hate the new formula with the "activated carbon" because I think the idea is sort of silly and it seems dustier. The old kind would be dusty or chemically-smelling for only a couple hours after I dumped some new in there, but this new kind stays like that for a while. It's very subtly annoying. But it's the only kind Zissou's ever had and she has not once gone outside her box, so I'm not messing with a good thing.

question for swheat users...Is anyones cat sick and eating it-one of my cats was in late stage kidney failure and a couple other issues(towards end diabetes and hyperthyroid...) anyway he started eating the litter so I had to dump it...I know the symptoms are eating alot but never had heard of cat turning to the wheat litter. We're using Cat Attract now because Forest has litterbox issues, and the Cat Attract seems to help. I wish it was flushable, but oh well...it's their favorite if not mine. (Mine was the World's Best Cat Litter...flushable and superior odor control!)

2nd July 2006, 10:28 PM
I use whatever is on sale, preferring clumpable. Do they make any other type? Currently I use Special Kitty Scented Scoopable...it's just fine.

I keep a small, lidded trash container with a bag liner right next to the litter pan and this makes it really easy to keep the box clean every day. Since I don't have a basement Pixel's litter box is on the same floor as I live so I like to keep up on it.

I don't have the best septic system here so I don't trust flushing anyway. I did like to use it when I lived in an apartment and then I kept her litter box right next to the toilet--such the elegant system.

I buy Litter Select crystals.

I buy it because it comes with puppy pads to absorb the urine... however it doesn't do the best of jobs. I like this litter because it's easy to clean and there's virtually no odor. It also seems to last a bit longer without creating a smell outside the box.

When I go to switch this out I'm going to put some clay litter under the puppy pads to absorb any extra urine, other than the urine and the horrible smell when changing the litter I like it.

Wow thanks everyone! I'm definitely getting rid of the Swheat - it stunk yesterday, yet I scoop it every 1-2 days, and have only had it in there for 2 weeks.

I guess Fresh Step and WBCL seem the most popular, so I'll have a look at them.

And ryanjay - no, my kitty doesn't eat the Swheat (probably because it's too stinky!).

I use WBCL and think it's great, as do my cats!

Sarah, you mention that you only scoop every 1-2 days! This is more than likely the reason that it smells! I scoop infinite times each day and we have never had an issue with smell even when I used a cheap clay litter!

I only scoop every 1-2 days with the Fresh Step and have absolutely no odor problem at all. The box is right under my bathroom sink, so I'd notice if it smelled at all since it'd be first thing in the mroning, and it doesn't. If you have a litter that you have to scoop several times a day with or it smells, wouldn't that be really bad odor control for that litter? What happens if you go out of town for a night?

It is not due to smell that I clean the litter so often, it's for convenience and my cats' preference. If there was a smell, I would primarily look at changing their food, not the litter.

Well, I don't go out of town for a night, but if the situation ever came about, my cats would either come with me or be cared for by my housemate.

I use Tidy Cat Crysyals- it doesn't cause any dust, and it controls the odor very well. I also like it because the particles aren't tiny...and they're easy to clean up if the kitty tracks them out of the litter pan. / When the stores are out of that, i like Fresh Step Crystals and Fresh Step Scoopable- but the scoopable has tiny particles and they track everywhere.

I don't see a reason to scoop after each time she goes. Litter should be good enough for you not to do this - that's why I go for the more expensive long lasting clumping litter. I don't WANT to have to scoop every couple of hours!

We've always had the long lasting litter, and we've always scooped every 1-2 days with no problems. As well as that, it's not a strong urine smell, it's the wheat smell I think. The litter itself was starting to smell after about a week or so of usage, which is surprising for a one cat litter tray!

I am now using the new Fresh Step litter with activated carbon. I originally tried it cause I had a coupon for $5 off a box, so it cost me $3. Both myself and my kitty are very pleased! I love how fresh it always smells whenever I am pouring new stuff, scooping out the litter, or just pouring the old stuff into a bag to be thrown out. With other stuff, we had problems with the house starting to smell a bit odd and it never helped with his stinky poopies. :lol3: This stuff is incredible though! :bigthumb:

I also had a problem where Skittles would not cover anything when using the other stuff. Now that we've been trying this new stuff, he'll cover everything as long as I scoop every morning. LOL

I use clumping litter (sophisticat premium choice). I used normal clay litter for a few years before that but I'd never go back to it now. I love how easy it is to deal with the litter tray now - convenience is important to me as I don't have a lot of time in the mornings before I go to work. I use one large litter tray for 2 cats and scoop twice a day. There's rarely any odour (only if I'm nearby when one of them does a poo!). If I leave them overnight I just make sure there's plenty of litter in there and it's fine. Fortunately I don't have fussy cats and on the odd occasion that I've forgotten to scoop it they've just continued to use it.

Hi...here's my two cents. I have tried everything on the market. Not only do i have a sensitive nose, so the litter cannot smell. but, I have black ceramic tile so I dont want it to track. So some of the litters took care of one problem but caused another. Also, I didnt want it to be dusty because it seemed like it made my cat get a wheezy sound when he breathed.
My best choice, has been the Feline Pine with their box. The price of it more than paid for itself. The sawdust drops to the bottom with NO odor. The poo can be flushed. It does not track. The only thing was the texture was odd and Remy had a couple of days of tip toeing around . But hands down that is the best on the market for no smell, no tracking and it really lasts a long time.

I just got a 16 week old kitten and also use FS scoopable (because his fosters used it). How often do you dump the whole box and replace? I bought a really huge litter box (not sure if I should get a smaller one now) so it will be expensive to dump the whole box if it is less then a month.

I use "Jonny Cat Scoop". It's fine grain and tracks, but it's also white and doesn't make the paws dingy. Plus it's anti-bacterial and clumps well.

I've tried plain clay based non-scooping and found it to be a pain in the butt to scoop out after they went. Plus the box stunk!

I've tried other clumping litters that are larger grained and non-tracking, but I also found that when it clumped you took 1/2 the box of litter with you when you scooped. Way too expensive.

One 8 kg (17.6 lb) bag of Jonny Cat Scoop lasts my 2 cats 2 or 3 weeks. I scoop 2 or 3 times a day, and do a total disinfecting of the box and adding new cat litter, every 2 or 3 weeks.

I thought Feline Pine was the greatest cat litter ever-the odor control was fantastic, didn't have to be changed constantly, no dust in package, etc. I had one big problem with it, however-tracking. When wet, the pellets break down into sawdust and I would find it all over the house. I had to constantly sweep around the box and everywhere else for that matter. I read another poster who said there was no problem with tracking with FP. Do you have one of those two pan boxes? If not, how do you control the tracking? I even tried a litter mat but that didn't help. Thanks

I use two, the litter I use,I think the Brand is Mio, is a scoopable clumping litter, I purchase a 10-liter bag all the time, then the Arm & Hammer cat deodorizer in soda form. Mio is a bit expensive, but I like the quality, it's texture is made to be pliable and soft to Oscar's paw, and there are plant-based perfume pellets with it so it traps the smell, Whenever I clean his litter box, I top the litter with Arm and Hammer soda, then mix it with the litter.

But then again, I live in Asia so I dunno if Mio is available for you guys, I think it's manufactured in Tokyo, my cat loves it :)

Today I bought a box of Special Kitty Clumping from Walmart. I've never used it b4. I have 3 indoor cats. I am fanatic about oders and a clean home. I'll let you know how it works.

I usually go with whatever store brand clumping litter there is. Wegmans (the local supermarket) has a really good one that I've gotten the past couple of times I've had to get litter. It clumps really well and I never smell anything from Harley's litterbox. I also clean her box as soon as I see her use it.

Interesting that this thread has come back up again.

We just changed from Worlds Best Cat Litter to Yesterdays News due to the dust from WBCL - Smudge would end up looing like she was wearing white booties after she'd been to the litter tray, and then she'd have to lick all the dust off - not good!

The Yesterdays News stinks though. We filled it fairly deep, and in less than a week I was gagging over the smell. I'm guessing we need to do a more shallow layer, and just dump it more regularly? If the smell keeps up, it's going. Not being able to scoop the wee out is its main problem.

I no longer use Tidy Cats, I now use Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat.

Yep. "Yesterday's News" is just what it says--newspaper. It soaks up the wee and gets soggy. You can't separate the poo from the litter either because the litter is too big to fall through the sifter. So, now you have a big stinking mess. I bought "Special Kitty" litter today. If this is not to my liking, I'm going back to "Fresh Step" or "Arm/Hammer". My cats are so good (bless them); they don't seem to care what kind of litter I buy. That is because I am a continuous pooper-scooper!

Tidy Cats Scoop

The cats like it and I think it saves me money. Prior to this I was using regular (classic? original formula?) Tidy Cats which is crumbly (doesn't clump) and wasteful although it worked great. The Scoop version works good too.

I usually buy the Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Fragrance Free

I've tried the Equisicat stuff at PetSmart since it's even less expensive than the A&H, it works pretty well and they have an unscented version.

I just bought the Costco stuff and am going to try that.

Ugh I just picked up fresh step free from the grocery store. I had been using the petco brand, but didn't want to drive all the way to petco when the grocery store is just 3 blocks away.

Big mistake.

I cleaned out the litter box, poured the new stuff in and pooof, huge cloud of dust. I've been coughing for 3 hours.

Ur. Good thing I only got a 14 lb box, so next month, I'll definitely be getting the petco stuff again.

I just bought the Multicat Tidy Cat Scoop accidentally as I was in a rush and didn't read what type it was. I only have the one kitten. Should I return it or do you think it'd be okay to use?

UPDATE: I just put it in her litterbox, I don't think the smell will be too strong. I don't know why I thought it might be; if it's good for multiple cats it should be fine for one!

it's not that different from other clumping litters - supposedly treated to work better at odor control when you have more than 1 cat using the box.
my biggest issue with it is the smell - it seems rather highly fragranced to me. i prefer unscented litters.
however, with kittens, non-clumping or edible litters are usually better - they sometimes have a tendency to eat the litter. really depends on age, tho - how old is Toby?

She's 4 and a half months... she used to eat the nonfragranced litter but I haven't seen her take any interest in eating this one... thanks though I'll keep an eye out for that!

"Special Kitty Scoopable" Is clumping just fine. However I bought the one with "Odor Magic Citrus". It smells HORRIBLE once it mixes with urine. I am going back to Arm & Hammer, Scoop Away and Fresh Step, whichever is the least expensive at the time...AND THAT"S THAT!!

I use Johnny Cat. I use it because it doesn't stick to my girl's long hair. I tried the clumping but it got in thier hair and they would lick it off, which I have been told is a problem as it clumps in the belly. Tried, the little crystals, the pine, news, just about everything but it would stick to them for one reason or another and get tracked all over and licked off. There is some dust when I first pour it in but I poor slowly and it is not near as bad as some.

Swheat Scoop & Feline Pine(original). I've switched from conventional kind(Fresh Step was the last one I used) as I was concerning on "ingesting".
Since I saw my kitty eating the tracked bits on the floor :nausea:, decided to get a kind which is safe for her as she literally eats it everytime she cleans herself...

My cats are not going to eat cat litter. I have absolutely no concern for that whatsoever.

I don't like clumping litter because it starts smelling faster, and gets filled up faster. 23 cats use my cat boxes! I use Tidy cats, multicat clay cat litter. Works very well for the many multiple cats I have. I get 50 pounds for 6$ at Costco. I go through a LOT of cat litter.

As silly as this sounds, my cat picks her own litter out. Over the past year and a half I've tried countless brands and types from clumping to clay to scented or not. Maggie prefers the cheapest junk on the market and unscented. Great for my checking account but pheww the dust! I've tried more expensive litters and she's gone as far as dragging things like dirty socks over it. (I've since moved the litter box away from the washer/dryer lol) If she likes it, I'm happy with it.

We use what ever is cheapest or best value since we have 5 cats it is expensive and we go through a bag of litter a week if not more. But we tend to get Fresh Step a lot and some other kind that smells good cant remember teh name!

We use WBCL (worlds best cat litter) and I love it.

My SO wishes we still used Fresh Step scoopable (because it really covers up any smellys), but its so bad for you! WBCL is made from corn so its good for cats and people with asthma/allergies.

WBCL is very easy to scoop clean, doesnt track bad like some healthy litters, and dust free. I buy it at the grocery store when its in sale (plus a sticker coupon) and only pay about 6$ for a good sized bag.

When i have the money, i think we'll get a self cleaning litter box, and then the search will begin for us!

I use Ultra Pet's Tracksless Litter Pearls. I put a beachtowel under Shorty's box and it really doesn't track:clap: Plus it last for such a long time. And I get free bags from the company with thier Frequent Buyer Program...I save the UPC's and when I have 6 I mail them in and they send me a new bag. Too Cool and the litter absorbs all the smell and I wouldn't change it for the world

I used Yesterdays News with my cat, smell was never an issue for me. I cleaned her litter box every other day. I only used it for the last year or so she was alive, before that I used a clay litter and never had an issue with smell.

One of the main reasons for switching to the YN was for my rats litter boxes. Does a remarkable job with smell and makes cleaning up after the little bums so much easier :winkblue:

I plan to use a different litter for the new kitten, so I am watching this closely.

I use World's Best which is made from corn. It really is great, I highly recommend it. There is absolutely no dust when you scoop, and the clumps are very small. Since it is biodegradable, I feel completely comfortable flushing it down the toilet.

The one drawback is that it tracks like crazy! I have to vacuum the litterbox area frequently.

I tried it, and it has its good qualities, but the area of the litterbox and the cat himself started smelling like Bourbon whiskey. I don't like Bourbon.

How weird! I'll have to see what happens in summer when it's hot...maybe my house will turn into a brewery, too.

Distillery, not brewery. There's a difference.

you get like 40lbs for 8 something, its a great deal and not really dusty and absorbes odor well.
