I just wanted to thank all of you who helped me by giving me advice on scratch posts. I got a cat tower with 2 steps for her to sit/lay on, a large, heavy base, 2 tassles haning from the top, a little ball inside 3 wooden "sticks" (so she can move it but not get it out) and the main post is a scratch post. It is tall enough that she can stretch out and scratch (for now). They dont seem to make very tall ones at the pet stores around here. Have any of you noiced that? If they are really tall the posts are carpeted and she doesnt like to scratch the carpet.

Best scratching post in this house is a scratching wall. Corkboard mounted on the wall is the chosen place for the cat's to scratch indoors. Outdoors it is the trees inside their enclosure-:)

I couldn't find one tall enough for Prego, so my hubby made him one :-) It was cheaper than buying one too. Petstores way overcharge for posts, IMO. Ours was made of scrap plumbing from our bathroom remodel. I think hubby paid about $2 for some sisal rope.

OMG, thats a really good idea. I considered making a whole tower with steps and tassels and fun stuff but with the cost of wood and carpet I didnt figure i'd save much money. I never thought about like PVC pipe or anything.

We made one very cheaply - cut a 4 inch thick branch from a tree that was about 3 foot long, bolted it onto a plywood base that was covered in carpet remnants, and wraped a 50' strand of 3/8" sisul rope near the top where they scratch. I think the entire post cost me about $6. We did use scrap plywood from our barn so saved on that cost.
