I want to share our solution with you.

My boy Dexter, who is almost 6, is a big cat. He weighs almost 16lbs.
He is long and tall. Even the largest litter boxes gave him a problem when he wanted to dig in and take a poop.

I went to our local "has everything" store & purchased a plastic storage box for $6.99.
I added 35lbs of Arm & Hammer clumping scent free litter...our brand.
It is perfect for my big boy. He can dig to his heart's content. :clap:
His sister little Sadie loves it too.:bigthumb:

I got the 34" long / 15" wide / 5" deep size.

I suspect that the box will need to be replaced more frequently than a regular littler box because the plastic is softer but it is inexpensive so that will not be a problem. I just tossed the lid that came with it. :nod:

If you have a different "big kitty" litter box solution please let me know. :wave2:

Oh, this will be helpful for when my Walter gets older, thanks! He's a ragdoll and is expected to get up to 20lbs. :D

My cats are not necessarily big, but they are picky about having a lot of space-- and there are two. I went to a local restaurant wharehouse, a place that sold restaurant equipment. I got a thick, heavy-duty plastic box. It's not very high on the sides, but it's the perfect size. Since it's made with thick plastic, it wears well. I've had it for about two or so years, and I expect it'll last another two. It cost about $17 at the time.

Yup i got 2 big clothes totes for when i got my boys. They were only 10wks old and it was funny watching them try to jump into them lol. They are about knee high to me and big enough for the both of them. Ive never used a reg litter box and dont plan on to lol:bigthumb:

Yup, thats what we have for Harley's litter box too- ever since he outgrew his other one!

We dump 20lbs of litter in there for him and he can dig at his hearts content, and have enuf room to walk around in too! :bigthumb:

Plus, they are super cheap! :lol2: I think I got mine on sale this fall for like $3.00! :D

I never thought of those storage boxes?!. The ones the girls have are a lot deeper than the normal ones, but Rosie's terrible when she digs because it still ends up all over the place :rolleyes:

I got two of those storage bins, because I knew out guys were going to get big. But I also kept the lids on them. I also have two Chi's that are perfect size for getting into kitty litter boxes. The love to dine on Kitty din din. LOL So I left the lids on and cut holes in the lid at first, and then I cut one on the side. Bings likes to use the one that has a top entry and Sammy likes the side entry. So they are both happy, and the storage bins are too big for my Chi's to get into. So we all win. LOL Though I do have to say we just got a LitterMaid because I got a job, and no one is at home most of the day. So they have been smelling up the house with their litter. So I am hoping this will help with the problem.

We just bought one of those a couple of weeks ago.

Nate is just obsessed with digging and covering up. Gracie is so neat about everything, she never even got a drop of litter on the floor. With our old litter box, Nate would get about 1/4 to 1/2 a cup out each time. We still get litter on the floor, mostly from it being on his feet - somehow it gets clear out past the kitchen. :confused:

Anyway, the new one works great and just like everyone else said, the price was right too! :bigthumb:

Ours was more time consuming.
It's acryllic the size of a 55 (possibly 75?) gallon tall aquarium.
Homemade with a circular hole halfway up the front.

Once we get moved though, we'll be making three rubbermaid tub boxes.

I would have found the perfect one when i was doing my grocery shopping the other day, it was a storage box like you have Lei and a lot longer than their litter tray but it wasn't deep enough :(

Susan, do have an 'In Store...' near you? I have numerous storage boxes from there that are larger than a litter tray and about 17cm (or so) deep! I believe they are pretty cheap! (I got mine from a trolley in the carpark, as they were broken! :blush: )

Oh yes i have Sarah!, i pass it when i go to Morrisons to do my shopping.

They are cheap as well because i like to have a browse in there if i have some time off, so i'll go in on the next bank holiday at the end of may because i'll be back from Gils on the sunday. That depth sounds perfect as well :clap:

They are really good tubs too, as they don't have big indents in the bottom! I use mine to plant my veggies in! :)

Personally, I prefer stainless steel over plastic for litterboxes. They don't have to be replaced for many years. This is what I will be going to next time I replace Liberty's box (we are close to this stage). All you do is go to a restaurant supply stoe and pick out what you need. Plastic eventually has bacteria problems but stainless never will. -kd

I also saw a large litter box that has the sides go INWARD. The rubbermaid/sterilite boxes have straight up sides and my kids kick litter out like crazy! I usualy end up walking on it with WET feet! :(

I had to say that Magnum is one great looking cat. He looks kind of annoyed in that picture. Does he have a bad attitued? LOL My guys can look just like that sometimes. :-)

I use storage bins also... with high sides. I get them at Bed, Bath & Beyond, these are the only ones that I have ever found that are completely flat at the bottom. It makes scooping so much easier & there are no little grooves or indentations to trap dirty litter.

do the cats climb into the boxes by themselves, and can they came out really easily? lol i'm worried they'll be stuck if the boxes have high walls ... and also for people who made holes in their boxes, how did you do it?

My cats have no problem jumping in & out of thier boxes... just like they have no problem jumping on my table & counter top, which is not allowed but they do it anyway. :nono:
