View Full Version : Question for Feline Pine users
reddicequeen 12th April 2006, 11:14 PM Hi...reading the bag it says that it should last two weeks. I have 2 cats they will only use one litter box. The others stand around abandoned. My feline pine turns into sawdust in about 3 days. Is that normal?
I do love the stuff, no dust, no smell and the cats like it. What more can one ask for in a litter *
Liberty's Buddy 13th April 2006, 01:35 AM Yes, that is normal. You change it when it is almost nothing but sawdust. In your case that would probably mean once per week because 2 cats are sharing it. -kd
Southernlocs 13th April 2006, 02:23 AM Yeah i change mine once a week, bc with 2 cats using it, it turns into sawdust way b4 2 wks
reddicequeen 13th April 2006, 03:21 AM my persnickety cats dont like the sawdust....i have to remove it as soon as it forms....do your cats mind it?
fatkitties 13th April 2006, 03:29 AM I dump it when the urine smell gets noticable. About 10 days or so for my two cats.

Southernlocs 13th April 2006, 05:28 AM Mine dont mind the sawdust, i think they like it better lol. But it gets on their lil paws and makes its way to my bed, so i change every weekend:rolleyes:

Feline Pine makes a litterbox that would make that job easier. This is the link to it http://www.felinepinelitterbox.com/ . I use it and it works pretty good. However, Liberty doesn't mind the sawdust. I use it because Liberty likes there to be a lot of Feline Pine in the box when I change it  . -kd
reddicequeen 14th April 2006, 05:13 AM that was a great link....
SolarityBengals 14th April 2006, 05:44 PM I've heard wood stove pellets are the same thing and you can get a huge bag for much cheaper than the commercial brand. I haven't tried it but thought I'd throw that out there if anyone was interested :) .
I've also heard n+1 litterboxes is always good. So 2-3 might be better for your situation.
random 15th April 2006, 05:42 AM I've been meaning to get their scooper. I always wind up picking up pellets along with the solids.
frawri 17th April 2006, 07:07 PM I tried this stuff out with my guys; the one didn't mind it too much. But my other guy. He wouldn't have anything to do with it. Even started to use my couch as his peeing ground. I am now going to try that Swheat Scoop, that way I can scoop it out and flush it right away. I like the idea of getting rid of the cat smell.

Etain 17th April 2006, 08:39 PM I have two cats that use feline pine, they both adjusted fine to it, and don't seem to mind the sawdust. I like it because it does a good job controlling the kitty pee smell and I can flush it, plus it doesn't track as badly as the scoopable litter, in my experience. The only pitfall I see is that they don't seem to cover their poop very well which means less odor control on that front ... I don't know if it's just harder to do because of the pellet size and shape (they do make a lot of noise throwing litter around when they're in there which leads me to believe they don't mind digging in it ... also when I change the litter or add fresh pellets, they jump in immediately and start playing like a kid in a sandbox) I am looking forward to trying the egg crumbles chicken feed though ... sounds like a lot of people have had success with this and its cheap! :)
cookandcompany 17th April 2006, 10:19 PM I use chicken feed & love it. No smell, hard clumping & no dust & is natural. (cheap too) My cats love it as well.
momof3rugratz 17th April 2006, 10:24 PM do you think the puppy could use it...Skittles I am thinking of trying the corn feed because I change her box every other day because I feel it is dirty. SO this would be cheaper. I tried flushable litter and it caused my toilet to act up :(
jasminesmom 17th April 2006, 11:37 PM I use chicken feed & love it. No smell, hard clumping & no dust & is natural. (cheap too) My cats love it as well.
chicken feed is the way to go! We all love it!!!! It works the best and you can't beat the price. If you are asking if chicken feed would work for dogs, I'm sure it would, just don't let them eat it or thier tummys might act up.
cookandcompany 18th April 2006, 12:08 AM :yeah: lol it really is great stuff. We paid 10.99 for a 50 lb bag & there is no smell whatsoever since we scoop constantly. highly recommend this.
Trouts mom 18th April 2006, 12:51 AM Does it clump?
cookandcompany 18th April 2006, 01:12 AM It clumps better than the scoopable litter i've tried, & I've tried many.
momof3rugratz 18th April 2006, 01:34 AM I think I might go get it at the hay store. Been wanting too but was so undecided.
celestialrags 18th April 2006, 03:58 AM It is flushable? I wasn't sure if it was. Is it safe for young kittens when they are learning to use it? I hate scoopable for them, and don't really like the regular litter at all, I have 4 cats and at times litters of kittens too, so I have to change the box too often. What I have deciding since I stopped using scoopable is a childs little beach shovel works good for scooping the shavings litter or the regular stuff, since it dosn't fall through the holes you can clean the pee out, I still use the scooper for poo's.
OPPS... I was talking about this shavings litter stuff, it wasn't even feline pine, it wasn't pellets. I didn't know that some thing else was being talked about too, but now i'm interested in the chicken feed.

That's a great idea! What a perfect litterbox for Feline Pine! GOOD FIND!!
Is that something you can just pick up at somewhere like Petsmart, or do you have to order it online?

If you don't like the cat smell, I wouldn't recommend using Swheat Scoop. I've never tried it because I know someone who uses it, and it just smells horrible!! She has it in a litterbox that's in the bathroom that guests use, and it's RIGHT next to the toilet (so close that your leg touches it). I have to literally hold my breath when using her bathroom because the smell is so bad! And it's the only bathroom on the first floor of her home! I honestly don't know why she uses that litter...her house reaks of cat urine because she has two catboxes on the bottom floor, and uses SS for both boxes. It's BAD.
reddicequeen 20th April 2006, 10:59 PM *crackin up here* chicken feed huh? My big question is *how does it smell* remember i have bloodhound nose. And what about dust. Feline pine you virtually have no dust at all.
momof3rugratz 22nd April 2006, 06:50 PM I might pick some up today because I am curiouse, but I hate cat smell so I will get back to ya on it.
LeilaLuv 22nd April 2006, 07:20 PM Feline Pine- How is the tracking?? be HONEST lol I have LOTS of tracking all over the pl;ace its horrible, I hate my litter but its the only one that Ive found that is flushable,no dust and my cats like it. "Fresh Results" is what its called. Im trying to toilet train but with this tracking business its IMPOSSIBLE im stepping in litter 24-7.
Chicken Feed- Again, tracking how is it??? where can I get it? Is it flushable?
I like what I hear because my cats pee ALOT and the smell can be terrible.
Thanks so much for the info!
cookandcompany 23rd April 2006, 02:09 AM We have no tracking, no dust & you can't smell a thing. And it clumps so hard that it is soo easy to scoop. I got mine at TSC (Tractor supply Center) But I think all feed stores carry it. Ask for the finely milled egg crumbles, Or the tiny chick starter. I have the bigger pellets of it & it works well too but not so easy to scoop. lol I hope this helps you out! Dawnde
Trouts mom 23rd April 2006, 03:53 AM Are there any negative things about using chicken feed?
And is it completely safe for the cats?
momof3rugratz 23rd April 2006, 04:54 AM Trout I love your new Sig..
Yes please let us know if it is truly safe. I am sure it is because you all use it :)
Trouts mom 23rd April 2006, 08:46 PM Trout I love your new Sig..
Thanks I love it too!! Icklemiss21 did it for me...so creative!
momof3rugratz 24th April 2006, 12:18 AM The coloring really stands out
frawri 24th April 2006, 05:07 PM I know some things like corn has pesticides put on them. So I would think chicken feed might have something like that on it to. How can we know it is safe? I would like to try this stuff out. But I wont if I can’t make certain it is a safe product.

Thanks I found this out pretty fast. LOL At first it was great, didn't smell at all. But that only lasted a day. And like some one else said on here, the pee marks are really big. With this Chicken feed, I don't know how it is going to smell after use. It has nothing in it I would assume to stop it from smelling bad. I also got a litter maid so it will be cleaned up every time they go potty. But I wonder if the Chicken feed will be ok to use in it?
opilot 25th April 2006, 01:11 AM Feline Pine is expensive. I use stove pellets - got mine for 30 lb bag
for 2.50 (unused left overs from winter.) Lasts a week and gives 3 changes or a little more for the 30lbs bag. I don't think its as good w/ smell, so
Iput a little feline pine on top, works just fine!! Way to go IMHO (course I buy 1.5 tons of the stuff each winter, LOL. What's a few more bags?):lol3: .
Jen 25th April 2006, 02:05 AM What are stove pellets?
Also I found that PetSmart sells Feline Pine for like 6.99 on sale with the card, so it isn't always expensive. That is for the big bag too.
Lucinda 25th April 2006, 02:39 AM Stove pellets are great as long as you make sure that you do not get the treated ones. Prob. have to just read the bag as I can not find any reference to which ones are treated. I have only found reference to the face that they are becoming scarce due to more people using them and more things being made of the leftovers that they make the pellets from :-(
I have used Feline Pine and love it! one big bag does last as long as 60 pounds of regular litter. I always sift it twice as many of the whole pellets will sift out with the other stuff.
