It was recommended to me to try wood stove pellets for litter box filler. I was told its basically the same as a pine type litter and sells for a fraction of the price and is compostable. I wouldn't use it in my gardens but I might toss it into the woods.

Before I go to the trouble of finding a source I thought I would ask ......Does anyone have any experience with this type of litter box filler?

I've never tried the wood stove pellets, but I've used Feline Pine and liked it. If you want to try it, be sure to follow the directions on the bag for introducing your cat to the new litter. Some cats don't like it, but mine all adjusted to it quickly.

We used to flush the poop, and bury the used litter in a compost pit.

The only reason I stopped using it was because one of my cats had bladder stones and ended up associating the pain with his litter, so I had to change brands.

We use wood pellets for litter at the shelter that I work for. The cats don't seem to mind it as much as I thought they might, though once in a while we come across one who "insists" on clay litter. I really like how the wood pellets are practically dust-free (compared to clay litter) & I find the boxes easy to clean. I don't know about odor control, though...we scoop the boxes twice a day so the pellets don't hang around long enough to get very stinky.

I used pellets and liked them very much. Unfortunately Tilli and Timotei don't, so I have to use regular litter now. If your cat approves of it, I say give them a try.

Do the wood pellets smell as strong as the feline pine? I was using the feline pine and the cats liked it, but it was killing my allergies. I switched to the yesterdays news, but it doesn't last very long. I find I am changing the boxes twice a week with the paper litter, where the feline pine lasted about a week and 1/2 before I had to dump it.

My goodness- some of the people I know were practically killing themselves to get wood stove pellets this winter- there was a huge shortage at least in the northeast. They wouldn't be too happy to hear what some people use them for!:lol3:
