When I took my Mushi to the vet a couple weeks ago, they cleaned out his ears to check for mites & such, and when I watched them do it, I was like "whoa, your gonna hurt him" But she said no she wasnt, and that she was a vet and knew that she wasnt going to hurt him. (which I was expecting her to say anyhow)

But when she did it, she did it really fast, and hard, so I didnt really get to know how to do it. But my Mushi's ears got some nasty stinky wax stuff in there again, and I think I should be able to clean them myself.

Any idea's on how to do it? like, a Q-tip, or cotton ball soaked in something? And just where are the parts in his ears that are sensitive? The vet just kinda made it seem like his ears were just nothing, and she shoved it in there all fast. Because I know if I stick the Q-tip in my own ear too far, I think it touches my brain, or something, and it hurts. lol. Any tips?

Stinky ears sounds like a yeast infection...did she give you medication to put in after cleaning? She should have. I use a q-tip with the cleaner on it, and then when I'm getting cleanish q-tips back after a few times of swabbing, I switch to a few dry q-tips. I wouldn't flush the solution into the ears. You really just have to make sure you're not going in too far. Other than that, it's pretty safe to clean them.

She did not give me anything to put in his ears. She did say that he had quite a bit of wax in there, and that it was stinky. But she said nothing else about it. :confused: Didnt know stinky ears could mean something bad

Oh yea, I forgot I have some ear cleaning stuff for kitties, should I use that with a Q-tip? Because it says on the bottle to fill his ear with it, and let it sit for a minute. But that's impractical for a kitten. And it never really cleaned his ears, and gets his fur all goopy.

You put a few drops in and rib it around gently by pressing on the outside of his ears. Then let him shake his head a bit to losen up the waxy pieces. Sometimes junk will come flying out when he shakes his head so do it in a bathroom and don't wear your best clothes when doing it.

Yeah, usually ear wax doesn't smell unless it's an infection....what color was the wax?

His wax is like a dark brown color. It doesnt seem to bother him, but when we are petting him, or playing, you can smell it, pretty stongly, and it's definatly his ears.

Yep, I would say yeast infection. Ask them to check under the microscope.

Will he get medicine? Or could it just go away by itself? This little guy has had so many problems scince we got him. So sad, because he's so darn cute.

They say he has an extreamly sensitive stomach, so I had to buy some "quality food" which has helped A LITTLE BIT with his pooping stinky all over the place problem. lol But it IS better, just a tiny bit.

Before that, he had some worms, and had to have medicine for that. And now more medicine? So sad...Maybe one day he will just be OK, and be able to be a kitten again. lol.

Yes, he'll need medice, and there's a chance the ear mites are still there too. Make sure he gets a couple dewormings, whatever the schedule for his type of worms is...Recurring problems can be the worst!

I agree. Yeast is very smelly.

He will need medicine. Untreated, it probably will not improve. Yeast infections are uncomfortable and need to be treated.

Worms and yeast infections don't mean he's "sick". Think of them as being like colds and skinned knees. They're part of being a kitten and not really any big deal.

my kitties smell a little too, maybe not as strongly as yours, but the vet didn't seem to notice when i brought them in. the 2 kitties will lick each others ears as well, so i thought that would clean them. perhaps thier cleaning the ears makes them smell? :confused:

Nasty, nasty little critters! The vet showed me under the microscope. Ick. Anyway, he treated her with some drops. A one time thing, put them in, massage the ears. He says that will do the trick.

Wow, what kind of ear mite medicine kills them in one shot? I've never heard of it, but would love to sell it at our clinic if it works.

The stinky ears with dark brown wax definitely sound like a yeast infection and beware...sometimes all of that cleaning can actually make problems worse.

Leo has had problems with yeast infections in his ears. My vet prescribed something called animax and that has been the most helpful. Within days, the wax has begun to clear up significantly, he's no longer scratching his ears and the stink of yeast is pretty much gone. I'd go back to the vet to have them check for yeast under the microscope. The drug we had no luck with was Mal Otic drops for his previous yeast infection.

i wish my kitties would sit through an ear cleaning. i can barely hold them to do anything. holding their scruff doesn't seem to work for me. i'm sure i'm not doing it right. :rolleyes:

I think all your kitties will need to be treated, since ear mites are very contagious. Growing up, our vet would even check the kids ears for signs of mites, because he said sometimes kids could catch them from the kitties sleeping with them. (Luckily, we never did!)

CoCo had an ear infection, and the ear drops did not stop the itchiness. She goes to be spayed, soon, so will have to get another course of treatment. She has one deformed ear, so I'll bet she had these problems for a long time, poor dear.

My mum got a puppy last year and Springer Spaniel and his head stunk, even after several baths and when he was at the vet for his first set of injections the vet lifted up his (huge but gorgeous) ears and they realised where the pong was coming from...! He had an ear infection and I think it was treated with a short course of antibiotics. Good luck with this I'm sure your cat will be fine once he has been back to the vet.
