I have two 7 week old kittens, and both have some fleas. Are they old enough for a flea collar. I gave them a warm bath with a drop of dawn soap and really didn't do much. They also have small pieces of dirt in their fur, I 've tried to comb it out, but I still see it. Also what age could they have a flea bath at a vet?

Revolution purchased from a vet would be safer for them than collars or bath products. It is prescribed by kitten's weight/age. From what I have read, collars don't really do much for controlling fleas.

Never never never use a flea collar!. They can make your cat very sick or even cause death! They shouldn't even be available in the stores.

Advantage, Frontline and Revolution are what you need to use. Get it from a vet, that is the only way to go. Even those can have possible side affects but it is the safest way out of everything.

Use Advantage as it is the safest for very young kittens.

I echo Jen and Semiferal - NEVER use a flea collar.

Over the counter medications for fleas do not work, are a total waste of your money, and can be dangerous.

The very best thing for you to do is take kitty to the vet, have him prescribe flea medication according to her age and weight and follow his/her advice.

If you have already bought a flea collar, cut it up and put pieces in your vacuum. Vacuum thoroughly every day and empty the container outside each day.

Wash any linens where your kitties have been and also vacuum your furniture.

The medication from the vet will probably be the kind that lasts for one month, i.e., it gets into the cat's system and any fleas that bite the kitty will die in a couple hours. Also use a flea comb and drop any live fleas into a container of water and dawn dishwashing liquid - this will drown the fleas.

You can buy counter medications - As long as they are Revolution, Advantage or Frontline - These are the medications that your vet will most like give you anyways.

Always get a medication that is Spot-On - I.e. you have a little tube of stuff that you put on the back of their necks inbetween the shoulder blades.

I agree! spot-on flea treatments only... and the dirt you're seeing and can't get rid of is flea dirt - basically the easiest way to tell they have fleas... it won't go away until the fleas go away - so get to your vet with them and get them on a treatment asap!

Definitely only use spot-on, but only the kind you can get at the vet! The stuff they sell in the grocery store is in no way the same.
